NSC To Discuss Mechanism To Implement Annual Sukma

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- The National Sports Council's (NSC) management board has not decided yet on how to go about implementing the proposal for an annual Malaysian Games (Sukma).

NSC sports management division director Abdul Jalil Abdullah said the council was still deliberating the best approach for the Sukma, which is for athletes aged 23 and below, in view of the move to combine it with the Mini Olympics which involved elite athletes.

In view of this, he said, the NSC would organise a seminar on Sept 27-28 to obtain feedback from the country's sports activists.

Speaking to Bernama, he said among issues to be discussed were the types of sports offered and the athletes' age limit.

Sukma would, however, remain a sports meet to unearth new talent, he said when contacted.

The seminar would also deliberate on the strengths and weaknesses of this year's Sukma, which was hosted by Melaka in June, he added.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek had announced that the biennial sporting event would be held annually, with the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil hosting the event alternately with the states.

Sukma will be held alongside the Mini Olympics each time Bukit Jalil hosts the event.

The Mini Olympics, which was introduced in 2008, only involves eight sports namely aquatics, gymnastics, cycling, archery, badminton, shooting, weightlifting and athletics.

The Triple Threat Bearcats under-16 travel team dominated the recent ECTB National Championships in Allentown by going 6-0. Defending their under-15 National Championship from a year ago, the Cats left no doubt that they were the team to beat as they scored an incredible 85 runs while allowing only 11 over the entire weekend.

Opening against the Pro Skills Academy (N.J.), the Cats wasted little time as Zach Issacson blasted a grand slam in the first inning. And the Cats never looked back with Tyler Mikell (2-for-3) and Nick Koffel (2-for-2) pacing the offense. Sawyer Hetrick and Bobby Reddick held the Pro Skills in check allowing onlytwo hits while striking out six through five innings with the game called on the mercy rule at 13-2.

Next up were the Hit Pit Pirates (N.J.) in what turned out to be the Bearcats biggest challenge. Mikell (3-for-3, with a double and a triple), Koffel (2-for-2), Isaacson (2-for-3, with a home run and four RBI) and Casey Clauss (2-for-3) paced the offense as solid defense by Kyle Weller and Christian Bruno combined with solid pitching from Ryan Dambrosio and Reddick shut the door on the Pirates. Final score Bearcats 6-3.

Round three would be an offensive explosion as the Cats pounded the All Star Baseball Academy (PA) with 16 hits in the first inning. Mikell (2-for-2, with a double and a triple), Koffel, Kenny Wolf and Alec Lashkevich each went 3-for-3, with a double, with Joey Casselberry going deep. Wolf and Steven Duffy threw three innings of one-hit ball as the Cats rolled to a 20-0 victory.

The quarter finals saw the Hit Pit Pirates make another run at the Cats only to be denied as the Cat's bats remained hot. Wolf (3-for-3, with a home runs and three RBI), Mikell (2-for-3, with a double and three RBI) and Koffel (2-for-2, with a home run) paced the offense. Lashkevich threw a crisp four innings in this mercy called game with the Cats winning 13-1.

The semifinals featured the undefeated Billtown Bulldogs (Williamsport) vs. the Cats in a much awaited battle. The Cats wasted little time in getting the bats rolling, again scoring four runs in the first inning, led by an Isaac Albright home run (2-for-2). The Cats continued to pound the Bulldogs with Isaacson, Clauss, Casselberry, and Nate Struss pacing the offense. Jared Price shut the Bulldogs down in another mercy ruled four-inning game, with the Cats winning, 18-2, and another trip to the championship game.

It was two undefeated teams in the South Jersey Mustangs and the Bearcatsn in the championship game. Once again wasting little time, the Cats opened a four-run lead by the second as the bats continued to explode and the game was all but over. The offense was lead by Koffel (2-for-2, with four RBI), Albright (2-for-3, with a double) and Isaacson with another home run. Casselberry and Wolf combined to hold the Mustangs in check in another mercy rule five-inning game as the Bearcats won their second ECTB National Championship in a row with the final score 14-3.
