Tri-Valley Youth Sports Roundup Posted: 01 Jul 2010 12:32 AM PDT Here are the weekly youth sports results for swimming, soccer, baseball, gymnastics and other Tri-Valley competitive sports: Baseball/softball District 57 Majors Tournament of Champions Connor Redmond went 2-for-2 with a triple, two walks, an RBI and three runs to lead the Danville Yankees to a 14-9 win over Livermore American in the TOC championship game. Brian Barcellona went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Yankees. Ryan Murphy blasted a three-run home run to give the Yankees a commanding six-run lead. Nicholas Venezia, Redmond and Dylan Calamoneri had run-scoring singles in the second inning to lead the Danville rally. Conrad Riccio and Billy Facteau also contributed singles, while Drew Kerr and Adam Lerner also scored. Pleasanton Phantom 12C The Phantom won two games on Saturday to earn the second seed in San Ramon. Pleasanton won in the semifinals before falling in the title game. The Phantom was led by the defense of Jenna Crawford and Carley Robertson. Kelsey Congdon and Emily Crimi pitched well. District 57 Senior Tournament of Champions Brent Stevenson and Nick Mendonca each collected two hits for Pleasanton American in a 9-7 win over Foothill in the TOC championship game. Lee Peal and Daniel Kuhfal each had a hit for Pleasanton. Pleasanton also had a 15-7 win over the Livermore Astros. Sean Stiles pitched five strong innings. Travis Duarte went 2-for-4 with a home run and Brent Stevenson collected two hits.Basketball Tri-Valley Crush 9th Grade Jake Salinas scored 19 points to lead the Crush Red to a 61-52 win over Sportstrong. Dominex Kovacs had 10 points and three assists. Calvin Rasbold added seven points and three rebounds, and Jake Trevithick also had seven points. Later in the afternoon, the Crush White defeated the Rising Suns 49-28. James Dayton scored 21 points, and Tyler Wallace and Curt Wigginton each scored seven points. Youth swimming Pleasanton Meadows Sharks The Sharks opened the season with a narrow 511-482 loss to Briarhill in Tri-Valley Swim League action. Nick Tucker won the freestyle, butterfly and IM, and also swam on the winning 11-12 medley relay. Swimming on the relay with Tucker were Jack Miller, Jack Geasa and Tyler Rhoads. Geasa won the other two individual events in the age group, taking the breaststroke and the backstroke. The 11-12 boys also won the free relay behind the strong swimming of Michael Azuma, Seth Girvan, Patrick Herz and Tommy Herz. The 11-12 age group was also strong for the Sharks on the girls side. Alyson Isaacs took two individual events (free and IM) and swam on the winning medley relay team along with Talia Florio, Adriana Harris and Haley Isaacs. Also posting 11-12 girls individual wins were Harris (back), Florio (fly) and Alyson Isaacs (breast). The 6-and-under age group also had a pair of individual double winners with Courtney Oliver (fly and back) and Haison Park (breast and back). Rounding out the double winners was Brent Werder, who took the 7-8 breast and back. Other Meadows individual winners were Joey Geasa (9-10 breast), Amelia Kelly (7-8 fly), Ela Kularni (6U breast), Zachary Lem (6U free), Nathan Shinn (6U fly), Trent Pozzi (7-8 free), Cody Vaeth (7-8 fly) and Sidney Vaeth (9-10 free). San Ramon Aqua Bears The Aqua Bears remained unbeaten in league action after a 993-783 win over Ruby Hill. Two of the most impressive swimmers for the Aqua Bears were Paolo Bautista (15-18) and Tyler Thomsen (7-8). Bautista won the freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, IM and backstroke. Thomsen won the free, fly, breast and back. Kathryn Park (6-under) won the freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke while Matthew Hanson (6-under) was victorious in the free, breast and back. Also swimming well for the Aqua Bears were Daniella Hawkins (9-10), Miles Reavis (11-12), Maddie Hurd (11-12), Danielle Gerlach (13-14), Riley Johnson (13-14) and Sarah Rowenhorst. ClubSport Tidalwaves 577, Dublin Barracudas 376 Ruby Hill Killer Whales 593, FAST Dolphins 349 Nicole Williams (6), Kate Weckwerth (6), Emily Harris (7), Christopher Yang (7), Kirsty Brown (10) and Brie Nicholas (14) all had top times for Ruby Hill. Tom Sornsen (11), Brie Nicholas (14) and Lee Evan (14) each hauled in 15 points. Laura Belichak (10), Alexandra Brown (14), Nathan Cruz (17) and Scott Fitzgerald (18) posted top times for FAST. Jack Basseer (6), Danny Caraballo (9) and Nathan Cruz (17) led FAST in scoring. DBAC Piranhas 502, Del Prado Stingrays 458 The Stingrays had outstanding performances from Meghan Hogue (10), Stephanie Jeffrey (13), Lauren Graham (7), Amy Heath (6), Danielle Sullivant (13), Cameron Kurotori (14), Eric Gates (17), Caden Banke (6), Jake Newman (12) and Michael McMasters (8). LifeStyleRx Tiger Sharks The Tiger Sharks had several multiple winners in a meet against Rhonewood. Christina Coatney (6) won the freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke. Peyton Hendricks (6) won the free, fly, and breast. Lucas Anninos (10) was a winner in the free, breast and back. Also winning events were Kristina Mena (9), Kaycie Lindland (8), Jeremey Anninos (12), Natalie Cook (14), Arjun Nimmakayala (6) and Lara Serban (8). The tournament, which will be a four-person scramble with a 1 p.m. shotgun start, will be held at Cherry Springs Golf Club. The cost will be $100, which will provide golf, food and beverage of your choice. Those not wanting to play golf can pay $75 for food and beverage. The primary objective of the tournament is to raise money for NSU football. In order to assure golf cart availability, register prior to July 8. TSC accepting fall registrations The Tahlequah Soccer Club is now accepting registrations for the fall. The league will be open to children ages four to 17. NATION Jackson will return to Lakers bench LOS ANGELES (AP) – Lakers coach Phil Jackson will return next season, putting off retirement for at least another year to chase his 12th NBA championship. Jackson made the announcement Thursday with a news release. The two-time defending champions' coach said last week he was leaning toward retirement after another long season, but he changed his mind after getting a week to rest up at his offseason home in Montana. Jackson, who will turn 65 later this year, says next season will be "a last stand for me, and I hope a grand one." Jackson is the winningest coach in NBA playoff history, with 225 victories and two more titles than Boston's Red Auerbach. He has won five titles with Kobe Bryant's Lakers and six with Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls. The girls' Level 4 team took second place, as Danae Williams took third in the all-around and Trinity Brown, Navah Marierose, Tyla Evans, Mikayla Powell and Dayanna Robb also contributed. The Level 5 girls' team also took second place, led by first-place showings in the all-around by Ashley Jones and Aliyah Waterman and a second-place performance from TaaTiana Boyd. Aleyah Moore, Tailor Clay, Logan Smith, Jerri Butler, Kai Lindsey and Kendall Drewery also contributed. The Level 6 girls' team took third place, led by Dominique Baker, who won the all-around competition by taking first place in the vault, balance beam and floor exercise. Ashley Belle took third in the all-around, and Raquel Chase, Madalyn Oliver and Alysha Belle also competed. Lena Morant and Morganne led the Level 7 girls' team to a third-place finish. The Level 8 girls' team took second place, led by Joy Engram and Audrey Barber, who were first and second, respectively, in the all-around. Lena Gillis also notched a first-place finish in the all-around, and Dasia Whigam, Micaela Miles and Jerrese Adams also competed. Khoi Young took first place in the Level 4 boys' all-around competition, and William Walker was third. Chase Drewery took second on the parallel bars and Brandon Baskin was fifth on the pommel horse in the Level 5 boys' competition. Christian Gray won the vault for Level 6 boys. Christian Manning was fourth on the pommel horse in Level 7. Christopher Junghans won the all-around competition at Level 10. Ruff Riders win USBA title The Maryland Ruff Riders U-16 girls' basketball team won the United States Basketball Association National Championship last week in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Ruff Riders turned back the Carolina Cyclones, 45-22, in the championship game on Saturday. The team opened with a 50-42 win against the Mountain State Magic, then won a preliminary-round game against the Carolina Cyclones, 47-36. Members of the team include Christina Briscoe, Jasmine Hill, Lauren Haythe, Dominique Powell, Ciera Simms, Shanea Butler, Maekala Bryant, Jasmin Butler, Amber Walls, Moriah Perry, Alexis Fennell and Jarinat Wiliams. Stephen Decatur teams win titles The Stephen Decatur Community Center had two teams win Southern Maryland Area Flag Football Super Bowl championships last weekend. The Falcons won the 12- to 14-year-old division with a 23-12 win against the Patuxent Community Center Bills. Members of the Falcons include Anfernee Perry, Antonio Jones, Arick Simms, Charles West, Deangelo Simpson, Elliot Davis, Joel Dixon, Nardae Henry, Ryan Wilcox and William Lee Lewis IV and coaches Billy Simpson, Charles West and Rick Simms. The Broncos won the 6-7-year-old division with a 12-6 victory against the Potomac Landing Community Center Packers. The team includes Darick Simms, Darius Wilson, Devin Hill, Edward Core Jr., Jalen Simms, Marlon Taylor, Michael Cunningham, Ryan Archey, Rodney Rice and Trey Simpson and coaches Edward Core, Reggie Simms and Rick Simms. Fort Washington splits first two meets The Fort Washington Sharks are 1-1 so far in the Prince-Mont Swim League season. After starting the season two weekends ago with a 274-272 victory against the Roger Carter Seals, the Sharks dropped a 318-245 decision to the Kingfish Swim Club last week. Fort Washington is back in action on Saturday morning in Laurel against the Russett Swim Club. Against Roger Carter, the Sharks got the winning points on the last event of the meet, the girls' graduated relay. Madison Thompkins, Kiara Leath, Akeyla Holley and Marlena Fernandez took first place (seven points int he team score), and the B team of Raiven Vanzego, Tamara Masciola, Gabrielle Griffin and Erin Dullahan took second (five points). Triple winners in the Roger Carter meet included Basem Magd, Holley and Leath. Griffin, Jared Saunders and Fernandez each earned two wins. Single winners for the Sharks were Thompkins, D'ante Jeffries, Eva Gonzalez, Alison Griffin, Rebecca Bonomo, Erin Dullahan, and Kevin Masciola. Michael Szymanski, Joel Saunders, Walton Irving and A.J. Gonzalez won the boys' medley relay. Meghan Bonomo, Rebecca Bonomo, Gonzalez and Tori Camardella won the girls' medley relay. Holley, Saunders and Griffin were triple winners in the loss to Kingfish. Arthur Walton and Fernandez were double winners. Jeffries won the 11-12 boys' butterfly. Ryan Bonomo, Tompkins, Leath and Rebecca Bonomo were winners in the breastroke events. Once again the Sharks began the meet with wins in both the boys and girls medley relay. Central Sports and Recreation: Lake Worth Pride 8th grade boys travel basketball team places second Posted: 30 Jun 2010 07:25 AM PDT Jeremy Efferding of Lake Worth won the 62nd annual USTA Florida Jr. State Closed Singles Sectional championship June 17 in the Boys 18s' division . The competition was held in Daytona Beach. Efferding, who was not ranked, defeated No. 5 seed Andrew Butz of Vero Beach 5-7, 6-4, 5-0 Ret. Efferding, a former two-time USTA Florida State Closed champion, trains at the USTA National Training Center in Boca Raton. Local hurdling champions Eddie Lovett and Steven Louis participated at the New Balance Nationals track meet in Greensboro, N.C. The competition was held June 17-19. Lovett placed first in the 110-meter hurdles event with a time of 13.61 seconds, and Louis placed 11th in 14.17. Lovett and Louis both are Palm Beach Lakes High School graduates. Lovett will attend the University of Florida in the fall. Louis will attend the University of North Carolina A&T. The Lake Worth Pride 8th grade boys travel basketball team placed second at the United States Specialty Sports Association State Basketball Tournament. The competition was held June 11-13 in Tampa. Other results for the Pride this season include first-place finishes at the Jupiter Jam and Battle of the Tropics, a second-place finish at the Treasure Coast Memorial Tournament and a third-place finish at Slam Fest in Coral Springs. Team members are: Simpson Dunois, Anthony McCray, Gerry Milligan, David Stevens, Richard Gaetano, Calvin Chandler, Austin Skelton, Ray Bureau, Eno Pierre Louis, Aaron Horne, Peter Camille and Dylan Kruisland.
