Gymnastics finds inspiration from other coaches (The State Press)

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 12:42 PM PST

ASU gymnastics coach John Spini wants one thing and one thing only.

"I'm trying to figure out what's going to get us to a national championship," Spini said.

The coach has even brought in a few Sun Devil colleagues to help drive home his points.

"We've had almost every head coach come in here and speak to us," Spini said. "We've had [ASU softball coach] Clint Myers in here and he's an amazing speaker. I just want the kids to understand what other athletes and coaches are saying."

Other guests have included women's soccer coach Kevin Boyd and women's golf coach Melissa Luellen.

It looks like Spini has made some friends over the past 30 years as a head coach at ASU.

"This is a program where we've struggled the last couple years with injury," Spini said. "Now we have a group of healthy kids on the floor, and I want them to get that right feeling."

The ASU women's gymnastics team will try to take the advice they've been given and transform it into a Friday night upset of No. 7 Oregon State.

The No. 22 Sun Devils (2-7) are coming off their best performance of the season in a 195.900-196.675 loss to now-No. 6 Stanford.

"We will put it all out on the floor and see what happens," Spini said. "I definitely am anxious to see if we can keep this momentum going."

In each of the past four weeks, ASU has improved its score over its previous outing.

ASU sophomore Callie Price is confident the Sun Devils will reach the 196-point milestone this week for the first time this season.

"We keep improving each week, so I think we'll get it," Price said. "We've just got to keep our motivation going and our energy up in the gym."

Price is a vault specialist and has been one of the team's most consistent performers all season.

"I'm just hoping to nail my vault and put up a high score for the team," Price said.

ASU hasn't beaten the Beavers (9-2) since 2006.

OSU boasts fourth-ranked senior all-arounder Mandi Rodriguez.

"I do have some concerns," Spini said. "Because usually a team that's building like this is going to have some 'Oh, are we going to keep going forward, or are we going to plateau and step back a little bit?'"

The Friday night contest will be a co-ed meet as the ASU men's gymnastics club team will take on the Air Force Academy at the same time.

Rogers' Hoover wins Class AA individual gymnastics state title (Pioneer Press)

A move up in class in Minnesota high school gymnastics had no effect on Rogers junior Sabrina Hoover, who remains one of the state's dominant performers.

Rogers was a Class A school last year when Hoover won the state all-around championship. The Royals joined Class AA this season, and Hoover completed the transition with another all-around state title Saturday night at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

Hoover posted a score of 38.575 to become the second consecutive gymnast to win back-to-back all-around championships. Roseville's Anna Gleason won Class AA titles in 2008 and 2009.

"I didn't know what I was doing last year," Hoover said. "I had so much more confidence this time. I knew I had to work a lot harder because the competition was a lot better all season."

Last year was Hoover's first season of high school competition after coming up with club teams. The adjustments to different rules and scoring made Saturday's title even more satisfying. She won the balance beam with a score of 9.70 and finished third on the uneven parallel bars (9.6750), fourth on the vault (9.60) and fifth in the floor exercise (9.550).

"She worked hard earlier in the season to clean some things up, and it paid off for her," Rogers coach Jennifer Bartlett said. "She learned what she needed to do to hit her routines. She's a very diligent worker, and we saw the results of that tonight."

Bloomington Jefferson junior Natalie Merrifield won the vault with a 9.75

and finished second all-around with a 38.325. She and Hoover likely will go through their final high school seasons as the top Class AA all-around competitors.

"I'll keep training the way I always do," Hoover said. "I've learned how to handle my emotions and stay poised more. I know what I need to do to stay successful."

Hoover has additional motivation to repeat. If she wraps up her career with another all-around victory, she would become the first gymnast in 17 years to win three consecutive titles. Mahtomedi's Mindy Myhre dominated the Class A all-around competition from 1991 through 1994.

"She definitely has the talent to do it again," Bartlett said of Hoover.

Gymnastics: Doerr and Krenz prep for state meet (Stillwater Gazette)

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 02:09 PM PST

Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it.

The Stillwater gymnastics team will be represented by sophomore Alicia Doerr and senior Kristina Krenz in Saturday's individual Class AA state gymnastics meet at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

Doerr is making her first trip to state and will compete in the beam and floor exercise while Krenz is competing at state for the fifth time in her six-year varsity career while competing in the bars.

"My hope is that they can have a good day, hit their routines and feel good about their performance," Ponies coach Traci Swenson said. "I'm not really sure what kind of potential there is for placing, but I think if either of them ended up in the top six it would be a nice surprise."

While Krenz is a familiar face at state, Doerr wasn't sure what to expect in her first season with the Ponies.

"It was a goal, but I wasn't really expecting it," Doerr said. "I didn't know how I would do. I just want to have fun and do the best I can. I'm a little nervous, but also excited. I just want to go in with a good attitude and have fun and not worry about it."

Krenz finished 21st in the bars and also competed in the all-around a year ago. She also advanced to state as a seventh-grader before placing third and second in the beam as a freshman and sophomore. Regardless of what happens on Saturday, she will end her career as one of the program's top gymnasts, but that is just part of the story.

"Her awards for gymnastics and the numbers of all-conference, all-section and all-state is amazing - and the years to get all-conference and all-state in the years she's been a part of this conference and section is doubly amazing," said Swenson, who spent 12 previous seasons as an assistant before taking over as head coach this winter. "She's probably one of the best leaders we've ever had and has really done an amazing job. We have a lot of younger girls on the team, two seniors and just one junior, and she's just really done an amazing job of showing those girls what it means to be a part of a team and support everybody and deal with disappointment in a really great way. We are going to miss her terribly."

It hasn't been easy, as Krenz has overcome numerous injuries during her prep career, including a minor concussion and torn ligaments in her foot this season. The torn ligaments diagnosis was actually positive news for someone who competes with a screw in her foot after breaking a bone in the same foot twice in the past. A year ago she was also severely limited by a stress fracture in her back, which prevented her from any offseason training.

"She's amazingly tough," Swenson said. "She's a really strong competitor and very determined."

Doerr appreciates having a familiar face on the floor for her inaugural state meet.

"I think it will be nice to have somebody there for support and to cheer you on," Doerr said. "I always feel better with somebody there."

"They're just really excited and we're excited for them," Swenson added. "I just hope they have a really good day."

The Ponies, who finished fourth with a season high score of 141.575 at the section meet, will also watch conference and section rival Roseville try to win its fifth straight state title in what is expected to be a competitive battle in Friday's team competition.

Chinese may forfeit 2000 gymnastics bronze (MSNBC)

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - China should be stripped of its bronze medal from the 2000 Olympics because one member of the squad has been found to be underage, international gymnastics officials said Friday.

Dong Fangxiao was 14 during the Sydney Games, according to an investigation by the International Gymnastics Federation. Gymnasts must be 16 during the Olympic year to compete.

"Young gymnasts cannot be manipulated," FIG president Bruno Grandi said. "Athletes must be protected."

A second gymnast on the 2000 squad, Yang Yun, also was suspected of being underage. But there was insufficient evidence her age had been falsified, and the FIG said it was giving her a warning.

The FIG has "cancelled" all of Dong's results from Sydney and forwarded its investigation to the International Olympic Committee. Because the case involves the Olympics, it is up to the IOC to decide if China should lose any medals.

The IOC has said previously it would take "necessary measures" if any gymnasts were found to be underage.

"We can confirm that we have received the ruling from the FIG in the case concerning Dong Fangxiao and Yang Yun, and we take due note of their decision," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. "Clearly, we need to take time to consider the findings before the Executive Board can consider the matter. We would like to thank the FIG for their work and we would refer further inquiries to them."

The United States was fourth at the Sydney Games.

"I'm happy to know that justice is being served," said Dominique Dawes, a member of the 2000 squad. "There are rules in place and, if they are broken, there should be penalties."

China must pay the costs of the investigations "for not having adequately controlled the birth dates of the gymnasts," the FIG said. The investigation included two days of hearings in December at the FIG's headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. Zhang Haifeng, the Chinese Olympic Committee's press attache at the Vancouver Games, called the decision an "old story."

"That was in 2000. Now is 2010," he said. "This was 10 years ago."

The U.S. Olympic Committee declined to comment. Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, praised the FIG's investigation.

"This is an extremely hard issue to try to address," Penny said. "The FIG has done a very responsible thing."

Questions about Dong and Yang's eligibility arose during the FIG's investigation into the eligibility of members of China's team that won the gold medal at the Beijing Games. The 2008 gymnasts eventually were cleared after documentation was provided showing all six gymnasts were old enough to compete, but the FIG said it wasn't satisfied with "the explanations and evidence provided to date" for Dong and Yang.

Dong's accreditation information for the Beijing Olympics, where she worked as a national technical official, listed her birthday as Jan. 23, 1986. That would have made her 14 in Sydney — too young to compete. Her birth date in the FIG database is listed as Jan. 20, 1983.

Dong's blog also says she was born in the Year of the Ox in the Chinese zodiac, which dated from Feb. 20, 1985, to Feb. 8, 1986. Dong has not denied that, but she declined to answer any questions about her age, telling The Associated Press, "I've left the gymnastics team."

Yang, who also won a bronze medal on uneven bars in 2000, said in a June 2007 interview that aired on state broadcaster China Central Television that she was 14 in Sydney.

"At the time I was only 14," she said in the interview, done in Chinese. "I thought that if I failed this time, I'll do it again next time. There's still hope."

Northfield ends Roseville's bid for fifth straight Class AA gymnastics title (Pioneer Press)

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 10:53 PM PST

Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it.

Northfield's girls gymnastics team completed warm-ups for Friday night's team competition in the Class AA state meet, then huddled together for a few minutes to have a chat. The girls felt they needed it to calm their nerves.

At the other end of the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion was Roseville, a powerhouse looking for its fifth straight state championship. Apparently, Northfield's pre-meet conversation was a good idea.

Northfield showed enough composure to fight off Roseville and win its first Class AA title. When Northfield's team members learned that Roseville had come up short, the composure turned into tears of joy.

"A lot of us couldn't help it," Northfield sophomore Meaghan Howell said of the emotional reaction. "We were just so excited. It was such an amazing feeling to know that we had won it."

Howell was one of the standouts for Northfield, which posted a score of 148.325 to end Roseville's championship streak. Roseville finished with 146.225 after making a late push with a strong effort in the vault.

Roseville posted a 37.150 in the vault, the team's final event, but Northfield had too much of a cushion with quality scores in the floor exercise (36.625), balance beam (37.175), uneven parallel bars (36.600) and vault (37.925).

Howell scored 9.4 or better in all four events, including a season-high 9.7 on the vault.

"Meaghan catches on to things pretty quick," Northfield coach Melissa Bernhard said. "She works on new ideas right

away. When she's on her game, she's very capable of hitting high scores."

Howell had a 9.475 in the floor exercise, a 9.525 on the balance beam and a 9.450 on the bars.

Northfield also got solid scores from sophomore Sveta Mason: 9.275 (floor), 9.550 (beam), 9.450 (bars) and 8.8 (vault).

"I didn't see any intimidation in the girls at all," Bernhard said. "The state title was kind of way out there for us coming in here, but we've got a team with guts and talent. After the way we started off, we felt it was within reach."

Cambridge-Isanti finished third with a score of 145.450. Lakeville North, which led heading into the seventh rotation, fell to fourth at 145.225. Lakeville North, aiming for its first Class AA title, stumbled on the bars (35.675) and beam (34.250).

The meet will be tape-delayed by Fox Sports South (FSS), with Brian Drebber and Lori Strong Ballard on the call, and will air on March 6 at 4 p.m. Magnetic sculptures will be given away to the first 300 fans courtesy of Anders Bookstore, while the meet will be followed by a team autograph session.

"We're excited for another great meet. We've hosted some of the top teams in the country at our place this year, and this meet against Florida on Friday just adds to it," said head coach Jeff Thompson. "We're going to go out there and put on a show. They're an awesome team, one of the best in the country, so we're going to go out there and do our best."

Friday's meet marks the 58th all-time meeting between the Gators and Tigers, with Florida holding a 45-12 advantage in the series. Florida has defeated Auburn in 11 consecutive meets, as Auburn last defeated Florida on Feb. 13, 2004, 197.00-196.900 in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.

Last season, the No. 4 Auburn Tigers were defeated by No. 1 Florida by a narrow 196.500-196.250 margin in Gainesville. Auburn then fell to the Gators at the SEC Championships, 196.750-196.350.

Florida enters the meet after edging Georgia, 197.25-197.15 on Feb. 19 in what was a season-high mark for the Gators and the first time Florida has cracked the 197 point barrier since 2008.

A pair of Gator freshman earned SEC honors for their performances in the Georgia meet, as Ashanee Dickerson was named SEC Gymnast of the Week and Marissa King was named SEC Freshman Gymnast of the Week.

Dickerson earned the honor as she tied her collegiate-best of 9.925 of floor, and a pair of 9.95's on vault and beam to earn her fourth all-around title with a 39.625. King earned the freshman of the week after scoring season-bests on bars (9.875), floor (9.85) and beam (9.825). She totaled a collegiate best in the all-around with a 39.425 to place second in the meet behind Dickerson.

Dickerson will enter the meet at the No. 3 all-around competitor in the country, while King is ranked No. 16. Dickerson ranks fifth on vault, No. 19 on beam, and fourth on floor. Miranda Smith ranks in the top 20 on vault as she is No. 17, as well as bars where she is No. 18. A pair of other gymnasts, Nicole Ellis and Liz Green also find themselves in the top 20, as Ellis is No. 17 on bars while Green is No. 19 on beam.

The Gators rank in the top 6 in the country in all team events, as they are No. 3 on vault (49.27), No. 4 on floor (49.135), No. 5 on bars (49.075), and No. 6 on beam (48.96).

MINNEAPOLIS — You're not going to pin down Joel Stark-Haws on how the St. Cloud Tech/Cathedral gymnastics team is going to do today.

It's anywhere from first to seventh.

"My hope for the next two days is, like always, I'd like for us to go 20-for-20 in our routines," said Stark-Haws, in his first season as Tech/Cathedral's head coach. "If we do what we can do, it's hard to say: Anywhere from seventh to — I hate to say it — first.

"But you never know."

The Class 2A team competition, which begins at 6 p.m. today at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavillion, is wide open.

Defending champion Roseville is ranked seventh and No. 1-ranked Elk River/Zimmerman/Rogers was split up before section competition. Only Rogers made the state team tournament and it advanced with a 144 score.

"It is kind of open," Stark-Haws said.

Competing at 11 a.m. today is the Class A team championships, which includes fourth-ranked Becker and fifth-ranked Melrose. Defending state champion Perham is No. 1-ranked and the overwhelming favorite.

The tournament concludes Saturday with the individual competition. There are 19 area athletes competing, including Annandale's Anna Woelfel, who is the defending state Class A champion in the vault.

Tech/Cathedral enters today's competition with only two members of its 12-person contingent with state-meet experience: seniors Anna Heine and Steph Strandberg.

Heine competed last year when Tech/Cathedral finished second for the fourth straight season. Strandberg competed with Tech/Cathedral as a sophomore, but didn't compete last year because of a knee injury.

The lack of experience at the state level is why Stark-Haws isn't sure how the Tigers will do.

"This group really wasn't in the limelight until this season," he said.

The Class 2A meet is indeed close. Four teams have hit a 147 in competition, including second-ranked Cambridge-Isanti, third-ranked Northfield/Cannon Falls, fifth-ranked Lakeville North and seventh-ranked Roseville.

Fourth-ranked Tech/Cathedral is one of three teams to have scored a 146 or better.

Having a man in a gorilla suit in the crowd may not sound like much of an edge to some people, but for the Nebraska women's gymnastics team, its fans give it an advantage when the Huskers compete at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

After three straight away meets, the No. 11 Cornhuskers are happy to be home this weekend for the Masters Classic on Sunday against No. 20 Arizona, No. 18 Denver and No. 25 West Virginia.

Junior Maria Scaffidi summed up the advantage of a home meet in three words: "family, friends, fans."

The crowd is the biggest difference between a home and an away meet because of the noise the fans create and the way they help get the gymnasts excited about competing, senior Kylie Stone said.

A "psych-up tape" set to Jay-Z and Rihanna's "Run This Town" shows video of the Huskers competing on the big screens before home meets. Stone said the pre-meet video, along with hearing the crowd and the PA announcer, help her get pumped up for competitions.

"I always get chills," Stone said. "It is an honor to compete at the Devaney."

Having the same fans there for every meet is also encouraging for the team. Stone mentioned the young girls from the Huskers kids club, one particular fan who always starts the "Go Big Red" chant, and of course the man who has started wearing a gorilla suit to all home meets as important parts of the home meet advantage.

Coach Dan Kendig said he always feels proud to be the coac h at Nebraska when he coaches at home because of how knowledgeable and respectful the fans are about the sport.

"The only thing that I wish we had is more fans, because the fans that we do have are awesome," Kendig said.

Another important advantage of being at home is that the Huskers are familiar with the equipment in the Devaney Center.

"For the most part, everything is the same; we are just more used to our equipment," Scaffidi said. "It is pretty much the same as what we practice with."

When the Huskers posted their lowest score of the season on beam last week at North Carolina State, the beam was different from what most of the gymnasts were accustomed, Stone said.

While it is important to be comfortable with the equipment in the building, Kendig said the advantage for the Huskers is more mental than physical.

"You have a feeling of 'this is our house' mentality," Kendig said. "We are going to hold serve on our home turf."

Even though many of the team members enjoy seeing the rest of the country, the team is ready for a home meet.

"I love traveling. It's fun and it's different, but sometimes you just want to stay home and have a home meet," Scaffidi said. "For a while, we had three home meets, and I couldn't wait to go and travel, but now I am ready to be home and get a good meet in."

Women's gymnastics regains No. 1 ranking

The OU women's gymnastics team regained its No. 1 ranking this week, marking the first time a Big 12 program has been ranked in the top spot for multiple weeks in one season.

Redshirt freshman Natasha Kelley was named Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

Kelley, who is competing with a torn ACL, led the Sooners to their highest road score of the season against Missouri with three routines of 9.85 or higher and a career-high 9.9 on vault.

Ricketts named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week

Freshman pitcher Keilani Ricketts was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and USA Softball's National Player of the Week, and senior infielder Amber Flores received Big 12 Player of the Week honors.

Ricketts pitched 19 innings last week and recorded a 0.37 earned run average. She pitched two complete-game shutouts in her four appearances.

Flores earned conference player of the week honors for the sixth time in her career. She batted .573 in Las Vegas over the weekend, scoring eight runs, five RBIs and three home runs over the Sooners' five games.

Men's track & field climbs up rankings

The OU men's track and field team jumped four spots in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association rankings released Tuesday.

The Sooner men are now ranked No. 12 in the nation. They were boosted by K.P. Singh, who is now eighth in the nation after breaking his own school record at the Sooner Open over the weekend.

Other top-10 OU teams and athletes include the men's 4x400-meter relay, Ronnie Ash and Malcolm Anderson who are ranked second and sixth respectively in the 60-meter hurdles.

The Big 12 Indoor Championships begin Friday in Ames, Iowa.

Coldwater to compete in gymnastics state tourney (Battle Creek Enquirer)

Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it.

Many of us don't see the determination, hard work, and sacrifice that define what it means to compete in high school gymnastics.

But Kim Nichols, of the Coldwater High School gymnastics program, assures that it's all there.

"It's not as popular as football and basketball. We know that." Nichols said. "But we're a very hard working team and we're starting to see the fruits from that work."

Nichols has been the head coach of the Cardinals gymnastics program for three years, watching her girls every flip and tumble toward success.

And this season, success means performing well at the upcoming Michigan High School Athletic Association gymnastics team regional finals next week starting on Feb. 26.

Coldwater is the only area team that competes in the MHSAA gymnastics state tournament and one of less than 60 schools in the state that have the sport.

"We are just performing phenomenal right now," Nichols said. "The skill level for the team has grown over the years so we're now able to put together routines faster. It's so exciting to see the seniors who have grown up with me doing so well."

To earn a spot in the team regionals, a team must accumulate 120 points at least four times throughout the year. Coldwater made that mark in its first five meets.

"I think that's one of the main reasons why we're doing so well this year," Nichols said. "After we got that taken care of, it really took a lot of pressure off the girls so they could focus on developing better routines for late in the season."

Nichols said she has also been pleasantly surprised at some of the other accomplishments the team has had this season.

"Our success is kind of unexpected," Nichols said. "We hit 130 points in early January and I done think the school hasn't done that for 20 years."

However, Nichols also is mindful that the team's success won't mean much without a stellar performance at regionals and admitted that the team has struggled in recent year on that stage.

"Now I really hoped that we can peak at regionals," she said. "I think part of the reason why we hadn't done so well was because we struggled to make it there. We didn't have to do that this time."

Another unique note about the team is that Marshall High School junior gymnast Bailey Redman trains and travels with Coldwater, but competes as an individual representative of the Redhawks.

The Coldwater gymnastics team, active since 1979, competes in the South Central Gymnastics League (SCGL) which, in addition to Coldwater, includes Tecumseh, Saline, Adrian and Parma Western.

Gymnastics: Stillwater finishes fourth at section meet (Stillwater Gazette)

OAK PARK HEIGHTS - The Stillwater gymnastics team crushed its previous season-high team score while placing fourth at Saturday's Section 4AA Meet at Stillwater Area High School.

The Ponies (4-5 SEC, 4-6) easily eclipsed the 140-point mark while posting a score of 141.575 - bettering their previous high score of 138.825.

Four-time reigning state champion Roseville repeated as section champion with a score of 147.375 - more than four points ahead of runner-up Mahtomedi (143.15) and third-place White Bear Lake (142.925).

Stillwater will be represented by senior Kristina Krenz and sopohomore Alicia Doerr at the individual state meet, which will be held on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion on Saturday.

This will be the fourth trip to state for Krenz, who advanced with a third-place showing in the bars after scoring a 9.475. Doerr will make her first trip to state after placing fourth in the beam and tying for fourth place in the floor exercise.

Doerr (37.0) and Krenz (36.9) also placed fifth and sixth in the all-around to narrowly fall short of qualifying in that event. Krenz and Abby Skaar, who competed in the vault, were the lone seniors from Stillwater's section lineup.

"The section meet is often difficult for seniors, as they can easily get caught up in the emotions of finishing their careers," Swenson said. "It was wonderful to see Abby and Kristina have wonderful routines. Kristina had some disappointments during the day, but I was so proud of how she graciously dealt with the small errors and how she supported her teammates and congratulated her competitors at the end of the day. She's truly a class act and a role model for the younger gymnasts on our team."

Krenz competed at state in the bars and all-around a year ago and placed as high as third and second in the beam as a freshman and sophomore.

Doerr led the Ponies in the floor exercise with a tie for fourth place at 9.45. The top four finishers automatically advance and in the case of a tie for the fourth spot it is the superior judge score that determines the qualifier. In this case, Doerr also matched superior judge score of Mahtomedi's Allie Bartholomew so they both advance.

Krenz finished seventh in the event with a score of 9.35 while Sami Matschi (8.575) and Sidnee Ronsberg (8.375) completed the scoring.

"Sidnee had one of her best routines of the season," Swenson said. "As the first routine of the meet, her score was a bit conservative, but her performance was outstanding. Sami followed with another lovely routine. She has clean lines and great dance and her tumbling has improved all season.

"Alicia had her best floor performance of the season. Her first tumbling pass was done as well as I have ever seen her perform it. She had so much height on her front-full, she was able to step out easily into her front handspring. Her dance was sharper than she has performed it and she had great landings on her other skills."

Prior to Saturday, Krenz had been unable to compete in the floor since tearing ligaments in her foot on Jan. 28.

"She had amazing height on her first tumbling pass and, unfortunately, had a step out of bounds for a .1 deduction. Her dance series was much improved and the rest of her routine was clean. She showed how tough she is, coming back so quickly from her injury to compete on all four events at the section meet.

Stillwater's team score of 35.75 in floor was its highest of the season.

Doerr led the Ponies in the vault with a score of 9.225, which was good enough for eighth place in the individual standings. Ronsberg followed with an 8.95 for the Ponies while Krenz (8.775) and Skaar (8.55) weren't far behind.

"Abby finished her gymnastics career with the best vault of her career," Swenson said. "She has been working on a handspring-full vault all season and she completed the full twist on both her vaults with solid landings.

"Alicia anchored our vault as she has all season. Her second vault was outstanding, scoring 9.225 from a start value of 9.4."

Krenz received a score of 9.475 to finish third and qualify for state in the bars while Doerr followed in seventh place at 8.925. Ronsberg (8.225) and Sami Matschi, who finished 13th in the all-around with a score of 33.875, were next for the Ponies in what was their lowest scoring event of the meet at 34.775.

"Sidnee had her best routine of the season," Swenson said. "She successfully completed her drop-kip combination at the start of the routine, which was very exciting. She finished with a great uprise combination and a great landing on her dismount. Alicia followed with another strong routine. She made a change to the start of her routine, allowing her to eonnect her routine more cleanly, without touching the floor on her low bar.

"Kristina finished our set with her best routine of the meet and her best bar routine of the season. She had some struggles with her routine on Friday in practice, but there was no evidence of that in the meet (Saturday). All of her connections were clean and solid and her form was exceptional. She has improved so much with her consistency on bars through the season."

Doerr's performance in the beam earned her another state entry after placing fourth with a score of 9.4 in her final event.

"She finished her meet with a confident performance on beam," Swenson said. "Her combinations were solid and her execution was exceptional."

Krenz wasn't far behind in sixth place with a score of 9.3, good enough for sixth place, and Matschi turned in a score of 8.8 while placing 11th. Kaleigh Eason also contributed to Stillwater's team score with an 8.05.

"Kristina's routine had only one error - a .2-.3 wobble on her dance combination - otherwise she was outstanding," Swenson said. "She has been so consistent with her beam routine in practice and the error was unfortunate, making the difference in placing."

n There were additional honors awarded on Saturday, including Section Academic awards for Doerr and junior Kelly O'Neill. The Section Academic Award is for gymnasts who rank in the top five percent of their class. The Ponies were also honored with an Academic Silver award for a grade point average of 3.74 based on 60 percent of the team.

n Stillwater's Dusty Dennis was also selected the Section Assistant Coach of the Year. Dennis, who also coaches tennis and soccer, has been with the Ponies the past few years.

"It was exciting to see him honored for his contributions to our team," Swenson said.

n The Ponies also enjoyed hosting the section meet, which Swenson said went smoothly thanks to the efforts of many.

"It was very exciting to have our culminating meet of the season at home," Ponies coach Traci Swenson said. "All of our team parents did an outstanding job to make the meet possible and successful for all of the gymnasts. Their efforts were extraordinary."

Goree finished seventh overall in Friday's all-around competition at the Tacoma Dome with 36.05 points. Woodinville's Hailey Wells won the all-around event with 37.9 points.

Goree earned her highest finish in all-around on the beam, taking fourth overall with a score of 9.3. She was 15th on the bars (8.65), 23rd on the floor (9.325) and 26th on the vault (8.775).

Teammates Risa Fukuda placed 20th on the floor (9.375) and 23rd on the vault (8.9), while Eva Perry was 34th on the floor (9.125).

Goree also earned a third-place finish in the individual beam competition on Saturday earning a score of 9.3. Only Woodinville's Mary McIntosh (9.5) and Kristin Gollofon (9.475) scored higher.
