Busy week ahead in local sports
MOULTRIE — This week will be busy one in local sports, beginning with the Packer Booster Club golf tournament on Monday and ending with Colquitt County gymnastics, soccer and boys golf teams competing for the first time this year on Saturday. The Colquitt County tennis teams also will open their seasons this week, traveling to Thomas County Central on Thursday. The Colquitt County girls and boys basketball teams will compete in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament that will open on Tuesday at Houston County. The top four teams in both the girls and boys tournaments will advance to the state tournament. Also on Tuesday, the Colquitt County middle school soccer teams will travel to Cairo for a pair of non-South Georgia Athletic Conference games. On Thursday, six Colquitt County wrestlers will go to the Arena in the Gwinnett Center to compete in the Class AAAAA state wrestling tournament. The six will go straight to the state tournament after last week's sectional tournament was canceled by the weather. The middle school soccer teams will play host to Thomas County Central on Thursday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium in a rematch of games played last Thursday in Thomasville. The Colquitt County tennis teams will go to Thomas County Central for their season-openers, with girls team playing for new coach Jeremy Paradice, who has replaced Linda Berl this year. Grant Hammack is back to coach what is expected to be a formidable boys team. On Saturday, the Colquitt County soccer teams will play their preseason scrimmages at Lee County. Longtime girls coach Jimbo Jarvis is back, as is boys coach Rob Craft. The Colquitt County boys golf team, again under the direction of coach Donald Dale, will play host to the North-South Challenge on Saturday at Sunset Country Club. That event has been played the last several years at Kinderlou Country Club in Valdosta. And the Colquitt County High gymnastics team, coached by Donna Marshall, will be in action for the first time when it plays host to a meet at the Moultrie YMCA. CHARLES BRYCE: Plenty of sports on tap for spring (The San Angelo Standard-Times) Posted: 13 Feb 2010 07:56 PM PST Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. SAN ANGELO, Texas It's time to buckle up and get ready for the busiest time of the year — and not just because the rodeo rides into town this week. There are so many different sports going on in the spring to satisfy all the sports junkies out there. If rodeo is your thing, you probably can't wait for the 78th annual San Angelo Rodeo to get started Thursday night at the San Angelo Coliseum. That will be the first of nine performances at one of the top rodeos in the country. High school basketball playoffs begin for girls teams on Tuesday. The district champions like Wall, Paint Rock, Garden City and Sonora have byes in the first round and won't play their first games until later in the week. Judging by last season's playoffs, it'll be exciting to see how far some of these teams advance in the postseason. The chances are extremely good to have several area teams in the state tournament. The boys basketball teams will conclude the regular-season portion of their schedules on Tuesday night and the playoffs will begin for them on the following Tuesday (Feb. 23). On the college level, the Angelo State University men's and women's teams will finish up regular-season schedules later this month, with eyes on the Lone Star Conference tournament in early March. Of course, the ASU softball and baseball teams are just getting warmed up. If the Rambelles and Rams can live up to preseason prognostications, the ASU teams could be contenders for NCAA World Series berths. Fans got a chance to see both teams in person this past weekend, and the 'Belles still have games to play today and Monday in the Blue & Gold Leadoff Classic. The outdoor track season is just around the corner for ASU. The Rams and 'Belles kick off the season on Feb. 27 at the Incarnate Word Invitational in San Antonio. All eyes will be on ASU phenom Aisha Adams, who won the national championship in the heptathlon as a sophomore last season before competing internationally over the summer. She finished eighth in the heptathlon at the U.S. championship and Adams is on track to be one of the most-decorated athletes in ASU history. The Rams, meanwhile, are coming off an eighth-place showing at the D-II national meet and they have a number of talented athletes, too. While we're on the subject of ASU athletics, the 'Belles golf team will begin the spring season on Feb. 22. It should be a strong season for the 'Belles. Gymnastics is under way for the Central girls and boys, and the big question is whether or not the Lady Cats can claim a fifth straight state championship this spring. Thanks to the addition of foreign exchange student Julia Hansen, Tony Walker's team might be even stronger than last year. High school baseball and softball seasons will begin in the next week, and the high school tennis season is just getting started. Golf season began earlier this month. Track season begins for most high school teams this coming weekend, as athletes begin their pursuits for district, regional and state titles. And if all that's not enough, the San Angelo Stampede Express indoor football team will begin the season on March 12 on the road against Arkansas. The first home game is scheduled for March 27 against Corpus Christi at the San Angelo Coliseum. The Stampede will try to make the playoffs for the second straight season under first-year head coach Clint Dolezel. Then, before you know it, it will be time for the San Angelo Colts season to get under way again. Hang on for the ride, sports fans. Charles Bryce is the sports editor of the Standard-Times.
