Gymnastics falls short at regionals

Gymnastics

Flashes finish fifth, team records no falls

Nine-tenths of a point stood between the Kent State gymnastics team and a spot at the NCAA Championships as the Flashes finished fifth at the Morgantown regional meet Saturday with a score of 194.825 — three spots behind Michigan (195.800) and an automatic bid to the national competition.

While Kent State didn't place well enough to move on to the NCAA Championships, the Flashes hit 24 out of 24 routines and were the only team at the regional not to count a fall.

"To be honest, we couldn't have done much better," Kent State coach Brice Biggin said. "We hit 24/24 and didn't have to count a fall. We had off-routines here and there but for what this team has gone through, it's been a trying season."

Senior Lydia Barrett, participating in her last competition as a Golden Flash, scored 9.8 on bars and floor and a 9.85 on vault that earned her eighth place in the meet. She was proud of her team and the struggles that were conquered over the season.

"The way we competed (Saturday) was definitely one of the best meets to end on and will be one of those moments that we remember from our college careers," she said. "We didn't have perfect routines, but you can't ask for much more than to go 24/24 routines in our biggest meet of the year, and beam really deserves a lot of credit for making that happen."

She added that to start on that event and go 6/6 when they had been struggling on it says a lot about the team's character and helped them enjoy the rest of the meet.

Biggin felt the girls did a great job of not being intimidated by the competition and earned many compliments for their poise. Stanford and Michigan are tied at sixth in the country, and Kent State finished just three-tenths from the 17th-ranked team S. Utah.

"Our goal for this meet was to make a statement outside of the MAC conference," Barrett said. "I definitely think we helped create a great reputation for Kent that will hopefully keep building in the next few years." Barrett said Kent State earned a lot of respect from some of the "big name" schools which will help the program in the future.

Juniors Christine Abou-Mitri and Christina Lenny were the only all-around competitors for the Flashes, and had off-routines on floor. Neither of the gymnasts qualified for the NCAA tournament but their coaches aren't disappointed.

"We made routines, every once and a while someone didn't do their best routine, but it's a positive thing to take out a 5th place finish," Biggin said. "It's time for the girls to relax a little bit. A lot of them have been competing banged up: you can't give 100 percent if no one feels 100 percent."

Biggin said there is a lot to figure out over the summer, especially Kent State's role in the next NCAA national tournament. Cleveland won the bid for the NCAA gymnastics championship next year, and Kent State will be the host team for the competition.

Coaches and athletic staff will be flying down to Gainesville in two weeks to evaluate what's involved in the huge undertaking of hosting the biggest college gymnastics meet of the year.

"I'm so proud of everyone on the team for competing with their hearts and showing that we're just as good as the top teams in the country," Barrett said. "This season was so memorable because it wasn't all smooth sailing."

Gymnastics places fifth at Regionals, misses NCAA berth

The ASU women's gymnastics team's season ended quietly Saturday with a fifth place finish at the NCAA West Regional in Los Angeles.

But for one Sun Devil, the NCAA Championships await.

ASU junior Mary Atkinson scored a 39.075 and took the second of two all-around bids that didn't come from a qualifying team, edging out UA sophomore Deanna Graham by just 0.050 points.

Atkinson posted the highest Sun Devil score on three of four events with a 9.825 on each, but she was in jeopardy of falling out of contention after a sub-par 9.600 on the balance beam.

"It feels great," Atkinson said, according to ASU media relations. "It was a bit questionable for a bit there, because of beam, but I snuck in there."

The junior's national appearance in Gainesville, Fla., from April 22-24 will end a four-year drought where no Sun Devils made the NCAA Championships.

The last ASU gymnast to win a national championship was four-time All-American Ashley Kelly on the balance beam in 2004.

Saturday, however, did not bring similar results for the rest of the squad.

The Sun Devils (3-21) tallied a middle-of-the-road score of 193.900, finishing well behind the national qualifying scores of 197.825 and 196.675 posted by No. 3 UCLA and No. 9 Arkansas, respectively.

ASU failed to score over 194.000 for the third consecutive meet.

Despite staying on the balance beam for just the fourth time all season, the Sun Devils were forced to count a 9.225 miss by junior Carly McMahon on vault.

"We did very well as a team, even though the scores may not reflect that," Atkinson said. "We went 6-for-6 on bars and beam, which I don't think we have all season. I think we can hold our heads high coming out of this meet."
