Gymnastics: Fenland five in regional finals

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 11:20 PM PDT

The club had 11 girls competing, with four taking part at grade 14.

For most, it was their first competition.

In the 8/9 years category, Jenny Cooper posted the second highest vault score and the third highest beam score and had it not been fo

r unfortunate falls on range would have been likely to challenge for a podium place.

Emily Dear produced some very stylish gymnastics and was unlucky to just miss out on a distinction.

Lily Watson produced a highly classy display in the 10 years plus category and deservedly took home silver medal and a place in the regional finals.

The evening round saw the grade 12 event, where Fenland were represented in the 10/11 years category by Sheree May and by Chloe Hawes and Nikki Colangelo in the 12 years plus category.

May passed with ease giving a solid performance across all pieces.

New to artistic gymnastics, Colangelo picked up a very well deserved fourth place with a classy and very stylish performance.

Chloe Hawes was hugely strong and consistent across the pieces.

With a positive attitude, beautiful presentation and very high scores on vault and bars, Hawes scooped silver and a place in the regional finals.

In Grade 11, Fenland's Sophie Wicks (10-11 years) and Hannah Rand (12 years plus) showed some very confident and sparkling gymnastics and earned bronze and silver medals respectively.

Ellen Stobbs also passed grade 11 easily, despite having an injured hand and is reserve for the regional finals.

Grade 10 was one of the highest grades on offer on the day and senior gymnast Charlotte Ward produced a spectacular and breathtaking performance to take gold and the county title.

With an immense score of 12.4 on beam, Ward wowed judges and the audience alike.

Clare Louro, who is the elite coach at FGA, also runs her own sports acro and tumbling club at Fenland Flames, would encourage anyone interested in having a go at gymnastics to contact either info@fenlandgym.co.uk or flamin.hot.stuff@.googlemail.com, call 07716 480402 or visit www.fenlandgym.co.uk

No. 2 men’s gymnastics take aim at 18th conference title as championship hosts

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 10:07 PM PDT

The Sooners will look to earn their ninth conference championship under head coach Mark Williams when the OU men's gymnastics team competes against an elite field Saturday night inside McCasland Field House.

The second-ranked Sooners (11-1, 4-1 MPSF) will try to avenge their only loss of the season, as No. 1 Stanford and three other top-12 teams invade Norman.

"Stanford being the defending NCAA champions, they certainly are the favorites going in," Williams said. "I think our best chance of being in a great position going into the NCAAs is putting together a solid competition on Saturday."

Other teams competing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships include No. 8 California, No. 11 Nebraska and No. 12 Air Force.

While OU fell short against Stanford in a dual meet matchup March 7 in Lincoln, Neb., the Sooners have excelled in the individual competitions all year.

In every meet the Sooners have competed in so far this season, an OU gymnast has emerged with the all-around title.

Both junior Steven Legendre and freshman Jacob Dalton have earned three all-around titles, while redshirt junior Ian Jackson and freshman Alex Naddour each hold one apiece.

Naddour earned his first all-around title in OU's season-ending win over Penn State on March 20, while also setting a program-high score (15.700) in winning the pommel horse as well.

Legendre (No. 1), Dalton (No. 2) and Naddour (No. 6) also rank high in the national all-around rankings.

And for only the second time this season, all three will compete in every event. In previous meets, only two Sooners would compete for the all-around.

"They're really the strength of our team and they're used to competing on all six events for USA Gymnastics," Williams said. "We're looking for not only the team championship, but for the honors in the all-around as well."

As a team, the Sooners are ranked in the top four of every event, including holding down the top spots on floor exercise and vault.

Although Williams believes his team can knock off the top-ranked squad in the nation, he said a little outside help from fans would not hurt.

"We're competing against the best team in the country in Stanford," Williams said. "A home-field advantage and a big crowd could be the things that help us to victory.

"We're hoping maybe we can steal some of the women's basketball fans and make it into a weekend where we can sweep [the Cardinal] in both sports."

With the conference title on the line, OU's final home meet of the year is set to begin at 7 Saturday night.

Peter Steinberg, of Palmer Township, won the Level 9 14-and-over all-around championship and took first in three individual events at the Pennsylvania State Men's Gymnastics Championships last weekend at Penn State's Rec Hall.

The 15-year-old Steinberg, representing the Lehigh Valley Sports Academy, compiled an overall score of 72.600 to outdistance runner-up Anthony Caruso of Hanover YMCA (71.100).

Steinberg placed first in the pommel horse (12.700), rings (11.200) and high bar (10.300); was second in the floor (12.800) and parallel bars (12.600); and was third on vault (13.000).

Steinberg, a freshman at Easton Area High School, was one of seven Pennsylvania qualifiers for the USA Gymnastics Region 7 meet April 15-18 at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

Jacob Light (76.700) and Colin Coates (75.100) of the Parkettes placed ninth and 10th, respectively.
