Patiala, Apr 3 : The Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) will give a cash award of Rupees 10 lakh to any gymnast who wins a gold medal in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games at New Delhi and the Asian Games in China.
With this, the GFI award will match the amount which is presently being offered by the Union Ministry of Sports for sports persons excelling in various sport disciplines in the Commonwealth and the Asian Games. GFI chief Jaspal Singh Kandhari said here today that the idea behind the move is to encourage and give incentives to all those deserving gymnasts who bring laurels to the country in the forthcoming games. He also stated that any gymnast who secures a silver medal and a bronze medal in these games will be awarded cash award of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh respectively. Kandhari said the decision to give the award was decided in the annual General Council meeting of the GFI held at Hyderabad recently. As many as 28 units are affiliated to the GFI. The GFI president further said that in order to give exposure to the Commonwealth Game's probables, the men and women artistic team will take part in various international championships to be held in France and Russia in the coming two months. These probables are now being trained at the coaching camp at Pune under the watchful eyes of a reputed foreign coach. Kandhari further said that the mandatory test events in gymnastics before the Delhi Commonwealth Games will be held in the month of July this year at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi, the main venue of the gymnastic event of the XIX CWG in October. This invitational international event to be held at CWG venue will give the desired exposure to Indian gymnasts. He said another important decision taken at the GFI meeting was to send technical judges abroad to upgrade their category status from four to three, which is a must to become a qualified judge for any major international competition. --UNI
