Boys gymnastics hopes for favorable IHSA board vote

Boys gymnastics coaches in the area have been making an appeal to Illinois High School Association officials in hopes of saving their sport at the high school level.

A motion will be voted on Tuesday by the IHSA board that would increase the level of participation needed for inclusion as a high school sport. That level is currently 5 percent; the motion proposes to increase the threshold to 10 percent. That's a level boys gymnastics would not meet.

"In my 10 years coaching now, this has come up before and fortunately it was voted down each time," said Palatine coach Scott Hagel. "This time, it's as serious as I ever recall.

"Hopefully, if it finds a way to pass, we can come up with a way to prove to the IHSA that we can be cost-effective and do whatever we can to accommodate the IHSA."

According to Hagel, the sport is "doing better than ever right now.

"I remember 15 to 20 years ago when teams were lucky to have 20 or 30 gymnasts in the program. Today most have more than 40 and many are in the 50s and 60s. From what I've heard, even if it is 10 percent, the IHSA might not act upon it right away. It gives us a chance to hope that things change down the road."

The team championship in boys gymnastics began in 1952. Individual event championships were awarded beginning in 1958.

Boys and girls lacrosse have already been approved as spring sports for the 2010-2011 school year.

GYMNASTICS: Nebesnick, Shannon finish top 3 at league meet

GILROY - There are currently two healthy members of the Gilroy High girls gymnastics team who compete at the varsity level. There is only one girl who makes up the Christopher High varsity squad.

Though lacking in numbers, both programs, who are coached by Nicki Anagnoston, enjoyed significant success at a league meet, which included Tracy, West and Kimbel on Friday night in Gilroy.

"We are young and we are trying to build," Anagnoston said. "Each year we get more."

Freshman Megan Nebesnick beat out 20 other varsity competitors for first place in the all-around, which takes into account scores from four different disciplines (vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.)

Nebesnick took first on the vault with an 8.8 (on a scale of 1 through 10), first on the balance beam with a 9.0 for her routine, third on the bars and second on the floor.

CHS freshman Caitie Shannon finished third in the all-around, highlighted by a second-place mark of 8.45 on the uneaven bars.

The junior varsity girls for both schools made quite an impression on the rest of the field, securing all six of the top spots in the all-around competition with the Cougars' Phoebe Vavoulis achieving first place.

The next five sports went to Mustang gymnasts, Fatima Magallanes (2nd), Sarah Aulman (3rd), Janelle Headley (4th), Marisa Verches (5th) and Morgan Triolo (6th).

"They had a few setbacks, but they fought back and that's what it is all about," Anagnoston said.

Other notable JV finishes include a 9.5 on the vault for Gilroy's Isabelle Diaz to claim first, and a 9.0 on the floor for Cougar Nalecia Hauser to give her second.

The next home meet is Friday, April 30 at GHS.

EZ Sports Makes It Easier For High School Athletes

MIAMI (CBS4) ― One father has an idea that could change the playing field in youth sports for good.  He set up a new website that lets high school athletes post their own profiles and market themselves directly to colleges.

Brady Stuart is a promising high school kicker who might benefit from this website.

"They're not really noticed until it comes down to the game winning kick," admits Stuart.

Brady's dad Mike Stuart says he and his wife have raised six children. You can imagine how much that costs the family in tuition. So when Brady started showing some talent, his dad came up with an idea: He built the website ezsportspage.com.

"What we include is baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, diving, field hockey, football, gymnastics, ice hockey, soccer, softball, tennis. And the 'other' would be for lacrosse," explained Stuart.

The site gets information about high school athletes to college coaches. Mike Stuart says it's because there's more talent out there than there is money to go around.

And it's tough for athletes like Brady to get noticed.

Mark Stuart's dream for the website was more than just snapshots and video clips. It lists the kids latest stats and academic achievements -- the stuff students used to have to present in a folder or on a VHS tape.

"So part of the challenge is getting the coaches to accept this technology, because a lot of the coaches are guys my age who aren't as adept in that technology," Stuart said.

It's not free; it costs $40 a year, but each student gets their own url and provide a service to coaches who no longer have to sort through numerous YouTube videos or tapes.

So far the site has been working great for Brady. UCLA or San Diego State would be the dream for him.

"The reality is he's gotten 35 or 40 letters. He got one from Stanford. I mean that's a big deal," said Brady's proud dad.
