Sports brief: Women's gymnastics to compete in NCAA semis

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 10:15 PM PDT

The No. 4-seeded OU women's gymnastics team will compete in the first semifinal of the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship on Thursday afternoon.

The Sooners will be seeking their first-ever appearance in the Super Six Team Finals.

The seeds are determined by adding the regional qualifying score and the score from the actual regional to determine the national qualifying score.

There are 12 seeds in the Championship, and they are split into two groups. OU's group consists of seeds 1, 4, 5, 8, 9 and 12 with the rest in the second group.

The Sooners are grouped with No. 1 UCLA, No. 5 Utah, No. 8 Oregon State, No. 9 LSU, which was in OU's regional, and No. 12 Nebraska.

The top three teams from each semifinal advance to the Super Six competition Friday at 5 p.m., and the top four individuals from each session in each event will compete in the individual championship Saturday at 5 p.m.

OU's session begins at noon Thursday in Gainesville, Fla.

RIdley's Kennedy Fair is a multi-sport athlete

Posted 5 hours ago

Kennedy Farr is one busy teenager.

The Grade 9 student at Ridley College trains at gymnastics five days a week and also manages to fit in weekly practices with the Ridley College Tigers soccer team and the provincial field hockey squad.

"I love my sports and I can do more," the 15-year-old Wainfleet native said with a laugh.

Gymnastics is central to her schedule right now because she's preparing for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships being hosted by the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association Monday and Tuesday at Ridley College.

"My favourite sport is field hockey because I'm on the Ontario team, and then it's gymnastics," she said.

She had been in dance since age two and has been involved with gymnastics at Ridley since Grade 6.

"I like learning how to do new stuff," Farr said. "I love watching and doing flips and I like how everyone is so into it."

She was the top private school Level 1 qualifier in floor and vault and is one of Ridley's top medal hopes at OFSAA.

"I'm expecting her to do well," Ridley coach Karen Oude-Reimerink said. "She has had some very good placings at invitationals and she has done well against local public schools and public schools in the Brantford area."

Farr is also looking for OFSAA success.

"Hopefully, I will do really well and place in the top three."

Oude-Reimerink likes everything about Farr.

"Kennedy is a natural athlete. She's strong, she has a great background and she has been a great addition to the team."

And the multi-talented athlete has certainly benefitted from cross-training.

"The other sports help me with fitness because there's a lot of running and gymnastics help me with my flexibility and balance for other sports. And also it helps with competing and dealing with pressure."

She doesn't think competing at OFSAA close to home will be a benefit.

"I do the same whether I'm home or away," she said. "It just depends how nervous I am."

Oude-Reimerink doesn't think it can hurt.

"I don't think it will matter to her, but she will be excited about it. It's not our own equipment so it's not an equipment advantage, but it will help sleeping in her own bed and having her friends coming out and support her."

The OFSAA championships will be held in the new arena at Ridley College following the provincial championships this weekend.

"It's a money-saver in facility and equipment moving to tie into the club event," Oude-Reimerink said.

There are 331 gymnasts registered to compete in the OFSAA championship and an organizing committee of 16 is running the event. They will be helped by adult volunteers and members of the Ridley College and Sir Winston Churchill gymnastics teams.

Other Ridley athletes expected to contend for medals at OFSAA are Sarina Mckey from Muskoka, in Level 3 floor and beam; and Cayman Island resident and Ridley team captain Lauren Anderton, in Level 3 vault.

As usual, Sir Winston Churchill, which has won the most OFSAA championships, will have medal hopefuls in several categories.

Monday's schedule includes: Level 3 warm-up, competition and awards, 8:15 a.m. to noon; Levels 5 and 6, 12:15 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and Level 4, 5:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Tuesday's schedule includes: Level 1, 8:15 a.m. to noon; Level 2, 12:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.; and aerobic gymnastics, 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Oude-Reimerink is excited about the event.

"It's a great chance for the school to see some pretty good gymnastics that they don't get to see very often."

The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Milo sports clinics beckon RP’s youth

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 02:28 AM PDT

Twenty eight years and still getting better, the Milo summer sports clinics kick off its 2010 edition beginning this month with some of the country's top professional trainers and coaches on hand for the 13 events on tap.

Lined up for this year's summer months of April and May are clinics in basketball, taekwondo, football, swimming, volleyball, badminton, tennis, bowling, gymnastics, ice skating, table tennis, chess, and karatedo.

Sponsored by Milo, the events are conducted in coordination with top sports clubs and associations in the country including the Philippine Taekwondo Association – the country's governing body for the sport – and the Basketball Efficiency and Scientific Training (BEST), assuring the use of state of the art training facilities while providing a nurturing environment for children looking to become the country's next sports stars.

"The Milo summer sports clinics not only harness the children's skills and capabilities, but also develop their characters as a person since a lot of values are learned through sports," said Andrew Neri, who was joined by fellow Milo sports and events executive Lester Castillo in Tuesday's PSA Forum at Shakey's in U.N. Avenue.

Joining them in the session presented by Outlast Battery, PAGCOR, Shakey's and Accel were some of the clinics' top trainers, including Women National Master Mila Emperado, Judith Brosula, head trainer and secretary-general of the Philippine Badminton Association, and Floyd Lobaton, Milo table tennis program director.

"Makakaasa po kayo na habang mayroong kabataan, andiyan lagi at nakasuporta ang Milo," said Emperado, whose Milo checkmate clinic has been among the longest-running chess classes in the country.

Castillo added that last year a total of 60,000 children took part in clinics held in 848 venues nationwide.

As the pioneer in sports camps in the country, the Milo summer sports clinics has spawned generations of kids who had blossomed to become superstar athletes in the mold of basketball idol Chris Tiu, Southeast Asian Games medalist Japoy Lizardo, former gymnastics star Bea Lucero and current RP no. 1 rhythmic gymnast Nica Calapatan.

Neri added these model athletes continue to inspire the new generation of youth to believe in their dreams, give their best in everything they do and encourage them to strive to become winners in sports and in life.
