When Gayla Rodenbur and her husband Leonard opened GC Gymnastics two years ago, there were 50 children enrolled. It grew during the second year, and during last check there were 130 participants from girls younger than five up into the teens. And there's a waiting list.

"The girls are great and they come in work two, three hours a night," said Gayla, who just finished up the third season with the team at the state tournament that was April 23, 24, 25 at Salina Central High School.

A program she started in Garden City after coaching gymnastics in Scott City for 13 years, Gayla and Leonard, who live and teach in Ingalls, have found quick success building the gymnastics program in Garden City along with Gayla's daughter Raelynn Carrell, who graduates from high school this month and will go to Hutchinson Community College in the fall on a cheerleader scholarship. When they began the program it started on the east side of Garden City, but with the numbers growing and needing more equipment the Rodenbur's had to find a bigger work space. They found it at a building at 1609 VFW Road on the west end of Garden City.

Performing at halftime for area high school and Garden City Community College basketball games along with other events, the gymnasts start practice in December, and depending on age or time they can put in, the Rodernbur's have the gym open Monday's through Thursday's during the season.

"It's been great," Gayla said. "The levels vary greatly and most of them are between 8 to 14 years old. We work with the (Garden City) Rec department and we have several people in a great support staff and coaches."

The work put into the gymnastics practice has culminated toward competing at the state event. This year, the team took 23 gymnasts to state and the final result ended up a success. Twenty of them placed. The gymnasts are divided into levels depending on their ability. To simplify what caliber a gymnast is by level standards. An olympian is the in 10-plus range, Gayla said. The Garden City team took competitors in levels 3 through 6. There were five state champions that the Rodenbur's brought to state.

Michaela Lowen was the All-around state champion in Level 4. Taylor Savol and Abigail Doughterty each won All-around titles at Level 3, and McKenzie Hanigan, was a state champion on vault. She won silver in the All-around. Britlyn Beach was a vault champion in Level 3 and fifth in All-around.

The Rodenbur's and Carrell have plenty of help with coaching as well. Rick Marquez is the upper level team coach, Allison Williams coaches Levels 2 and 3, and Savannah Dwyre and Valarie Ceja coach the 'kindergym'.
