ESPN Sports Expo is Saturday at the O'Dome

Posted: 12 May 2010 04:27 PM PDT

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the arena will host the 2010 ESPN Sports Expo presented by ESPN Radio. The event will bring together sports enthusiasts with a wide spectrum of interests such as boating, archery, golf, fencing, off-roading, gymnastics, medicine and nutrition.

Tom Machnik, sales manager for ESPN Radio and organizer of the expo, said the goal of the event is to bring together local residents with common sports interests.

"Everything that we have is related to sports in some way or another," he said. "Anything related to getting outdoors and having fun."

More than fifteen sponsors will operate interactive booths showcasing their products or services. One of these is the Gainesville Sports Commission, which executive director Jack Hughes said seeks to increase awareness of sports events in the community. The organization will be recruiting volunteers for upcoming events in Gainesville such as the Sunshine State Games. Hughes said the expo serves two purposes. It stimulates the economy by bringing in tourist dollars and also provides opportunities for locals to compete for their city, "as the home team."

Habitat for Humanity will host a silent auction for sports memorabilia, Machnik said. Instructors from Shane Matthews' football camp will also be on hand, though the former Gator quarterback will not be in attendance himself. However, Machnik said former Gator-and-NFL wide receiver Chris Doering will sign autographs. The Gainesville Roller Rebels, the city's roller derby team, and UF's rugby club will also be in attendance, he said.

Last time the expo was held, in 2002, about 2,400 people showed up during the event, which was then two days long. Machnik said he is expecting about 2,000 attendees on Saturday.

Admission is $6 for adults older than 12, $3 for kids age 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. Tickets are only available at the door at Gate 1.

Other sponsors on hand will include Santa Fe Powersports, L&S Auto Trim, Brasington's Adventure Outfitters, Gainesville Health and Fitness Center and representatives from parks and recreation agencies, just to name a few.

"You can come get in touch with anything available in the world of sports," Machnik said. "If you are interested in sports and connecting with the community, this is the place to go."

Flint River Trail bikers back on the pavement

FLINT — It's time to oil up the sprockets and dust of the helmets the Friends of the Flint River Trail (FFRT) are back on the road with their weekly bicycle rides

The group meets Sundays at 2 p.m. at Flint Farmers' Market for a roughly 13 mile ride to either Blue Bell Beach or Stepping Stone Falls.

An FFRT spokesman said the rides are suitable for families and/or for those just getting "back on the bike" after the winter or after a few years of non-riding.

The spokesman added these are "no-drop" rides, which means an FFRT rider will accompany the riders at all times. A shorter ride is available as needed for those unwilling or unable to try the longer one. Simple refreshments are available at the end of the ride.

The FFRT's Flint River Trail rides are offered every Sunday through the end of October. Pre-registration is not required. Riders should just "show up ready to ride" and helmets are strongly recommended.

The group host a slightly longer ride to the Village of Genesee and Ms. Smitty's ice-cream shop the second Sunday of each month. Riders should plan to purchase their own treats for that ride.
