Sports wrap: Pioneers do well at home Posted: 23 May 2010 06:58 AM PDT The University of Denver Athletics Department could not have asked for a better weekend of competition from its athletes. Basketball went 4-0, gymnastics won their meets, swimming finished second in both men and women's competition and women's lacrosse won both its games. Only hockey suffered two tough losses on the road to No. 1 Minnesota. Men's Basketball: Coming into the weekend losers of three of their previous four games, the Pioneers were in need of some big wins and that is exactly what they got. They started the weekend off on Wednesday with a closer than expected 85-80 victory over Northern Colorado at Magness Arena. Senior Yemi Nicholson led the way with 28 points and seven rebounds, sophomore Steve Wetrich added 20 points and senior Brett Seger put in 16 as DU tallied its most points in a game this season. Denver (15-12, 7-6) played its final home game of the season Saturday afternoon against Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas and defeated the Mean Green 79-73 before 3,693 fans in Magness. "It means a lot to win the last home game, especially for the seniors. We promised them a win and we did," said junior DaShawn Walker. The Pioneers led 39-38 at the half thanks to a 20 point first half performance from Nicholson and received some big shots from Walker down the stretch to pull away and hold on for the big conference win. "DaShawn has always been good for us. He has been coming out here and playing his heart out and hitting big shots for us, and making the other team not want to double team me," said Nicholson. Nicholson once again led the way with 30 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. Walker finished with 20 points and six rebounds, Seger had 10 points and Wetrich put in nine. "I hope we come out of here with some confidence today. I thought we really played well down the stretch and did a good job of distributing the ball, and making big plays and free throws," said Head Coach Terry Carroll. Denver will play its final regular season games this weekend as they travel to South Alabama and Troy State. DU is currently in second place in the western division of the SBC behind South Alabama. Women's basketball: The Lady Pioneers (13-12, 6-7) had similar success this weekend with a 55-48 home victory over Northern Colorado on Thursday night and a 74-69 conference win over North Texas on Saturday night. Thursday night junior Tyesha Lowery had 17 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds and senior Venice Adams added 12 points in a non-conference victory. In front of 1,236 fans on Saturday night sophomore Sara Benham led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Adams finished with 14 points and 10 boards, Lowery had 16 and sophomore Brooke Meyer added 12. DU will also be on the road this weekend against South Alabama and Troy. Women's Gymnastics: The ladies stayed unbeaten at home this season with a 195.725 to 194.725 victory over Ohio State in front of 1,926 fans in Hamilton Gymnasium. Denver is now 10-3 on the season and was led by freshman Jessica López who won three events, including a 9.95 on the uneven bars, a 9.9 on the balance beam and a 9.9 on the floor exercise. DU will travel to North Carolina this weekend to battle N.C. State, North Carolina and George Washington. Women's Lacrosse: The lady Pioneers are off to their best start in school history with two home wins to open the season at 2-0. DU defeated Longwood University (Virginia) 18-4 last Thursday to open the season with ease and followed with a 9-7 victory over Duquesne (Pittsburgh) on Sunday. Senior Tanya Fuchs and freshman Karen Morton scored four goals for DU on Thursday. Senior Stephanie Greenlees and junior Kristie Leggio added three goals each as Denver had a 10-0 lead and never looked back. The Pioneers had a tougher task on Sunday, as they had an early 6-1 lead, before the Dukes came back to make it a 7-5 game before Denver pulled away for the win. Greenlees led the way with three goals and Fuchs had two goals and one assist. DU's next match will be on the road this weekend at Virginia Tech. The next home game is Saturday March 4 at 11 a.m. against Hofstra. Men's Hockey: DU struggled this weekend as it lost 3-2 and 5-1 at No. 1 Minnesota. The Pioneers and Gophers were tied 2-2 heading into the third period Friday night, but a late goal by Minnesota gave them the win. Denver had goals by Ryan Dingle and Patrick Mullen. Saturday was a different story as the Gophers scored two goals on sophomore goaltender Peter Mannino in the first two minutes of the first period and never looked back in a 5-1 route. DU's lone goal was scored by senior Gabe Gauthier. Denver will host North Dakota this weekend, before the big Colorado College series to close out the regular season next weekend.
