The City of Leeds Gymnastics Club says that it has been "left in limbo" for almost a year by Leeds City Council that launched a review into gymnastics but failed to publish its findings.

The Club's management committee say without feedback it can only assume that gymnastic training is costing the authority too much, and that it wants to reduce facilities. But for now the "not knowing" is jeopardising gymnastic standards.

The Club, which was set up on a voluntary basis to allow talented Leeds athletes to compete, is urging Leeds City Council to protect the stars of the future.

It wants permanent coaches at the Leeds Carnegie Regional Gymnastics Centre – currently there is only one.

And it wants coaches to be employed for longer hours to give promising
talents such as 11-year-olds Loukas Jones and Harry O'Neill a real chance at elite level.

The pleas come days after acrobatic gymnasts that train in Wakefield told the YEP they feared a lack of funding could scupper their world competition dreams.

A statement, released by City of Leeds club secretary Jane Garrud, said: "City of Leeds Gymnastics Club management committee feel very strongly that (it] has been left in limbo because the Council has not shared the outcome of the 2009 review into gymnastics.

"This was completed in July of last year and should have been released in September.

"The Club has had to stand by and watch whilst coaches have left and not been replaced and, as a consequence, parents and gymnasts are now very worried about their future and some have already left.

"We would like to see the release of this information at the earliest opportunity."

Loukas and Harry are ranked first and third, respectively, in their age group in the UK.

Harry's dad Darren O'Neil, from Rothwell, Leeds, said that if money was an issue the authority should be thinking of finding a permanent training ground rather than wasting cash on renting space.

"City of Leeds Gymnastics is producing top professional Olympic stars of the future," he said.

"My son gets 17 hours training while other clubs get much more.

"To reach Olympic standard the coaches need to put in more hours. The boys and girls are working towards that. Other clubs are poaching our coaches.

"It's so upsetting that we have got such talented people from the city of Leeds but we are held to ransom by Leeds City Council as we don't know what the future is."

A spokeswoman for Leeds City Council said that the future of gymnastics had to be "cost effective".

"We have been working closely with Gymnastics England to develop our joint approach to gymnastics in Leeds and hope to release the results of the review once we have had time to consider all the options available," she added.
