June 4, 2010 Sports Roundup - June 5, 2010Rockets hold cheerleading sign-ups CUMBERLAND — The East-West Rockets Competitive All-Stars cheerleading team will conduct sign-ups for girls and boys ages 5-8 for the 2010-2011 competitive cheerleading season at Cumberland Gymnastics and Cheer inside the Riverside YMCA every Tuesday and Wednesday in June from, 6-8 p.m. For girls and boys 9-18 years of age a private tryout can be scheduled by calling Miss Karen at 301-724-FLIP (3547). PVAA's first JCP Soccer sign-up today CRESAPTOWN — The Potomac Valley Athletic Association (PVAA) will hold player registrations for the upcoming fall season today, June 12 and June 19 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the pavilion located at Weber Field at the First Peoples Sports Complex off of Darrows Lane. The registration fee will be $70 per player with no mandatory fund raisers. Registration is open to all boys and girls ages 5 through 14 as of Sept. 1. JCP Soccer League age divisions include: B Division ages 5-7 (K, 1st and 2nd grade); J.V. Division ages 8-10 (3rd, 4th, and 5th grade); Varsity Division ages 11-14 (6th, 7th, and 8th grades). Fore Sisters ladies play Wednesday RAWLINGS — The Fore Sisters Ladies League played Wednesday, with Donna Purdy, Susan Scarpelli, Fran Whitman and Carol Roberts winning in a cardoff at 35 over Deb Mohler, Lauretta Michaels and Sharon Clark. Closest to the pin on No. 4 was Michaels while Carol Roberts had the closest second shot on No. 2. Mountain Ridge boys' soccer to meet FROSTBURG — Mountain Ridge boys' soccer will hold an organizational meeting Monday, June 7, 7:30 p.m., in the Mountain Ridge High School auxiliary gymnasium. All prospective players entering grades 9-12, including parents/guardians, should attend. Forms will be distributed including summer training schedule, physicals and participation contracts. TGIF reports Friday winners FROSTBURG — The TGIF league of Maplehurst played this past Friday and the winners were Gary Watson, Joe Metz, Moose Stevens and Al Snyder. The second-place team was Rick Merrill, Andy Brehm, Burt Ewin and Jim Folk. Closest to the pins were Joe Metz on No. 2, Lynn Lewis on No. 7 and No. 15 and Rick Merrill on No. 10. LL, softball team photos needed CUMBERLAND — Team photographs of little league baseball teams and youth softball teams should be submitted to the Times-News so they can appear in the annual Little League/Softball Section which will be published on Wednesday, June 23. Photos received after Monday, June 14 will not appear in the section. The Little League/Softball Section is designed to recognize each and every team in the area from all of the various leagues. Therefore, no other little league or youth softball team photos will appear in the Times-News after the June 23 section is published, including championship teams from the various leagues or tournaments. The name of the team and the name of the league in which the particular team plays must be clearly identified with e-mailed photos or on the back of hard-copy photos. Photos can be e-mailed to mburke@times-news.com; mailed to Times-News sports editor Mike Burke, Cumberland Times-News, P.O. Box 1662, Cumberland, Md., 21501-1662; or brought in to the Times-News editorial department, using the door on the S. Mechanic Street side of the building. All photographs should be earmarked "Little League Section." The Times-News will not mail hard-copy photographs back to contributors but will keep the photos for one month after the section is published so they can be picked up. MGA results from Polish Pines KEYSER, W.Va. — Ron Yutzy, Wayne Longenecker, Lee Garland and Brad Yutzy won the Polish Pines Men's Golf Association play held Thursday at the golf course. Eric Hyett, Jeff Alt, Ed Mickey and Steve Thrasher placed second. Closest to the pin winners were Hyett (No. 2), Bob Smith (No. 4), Mickey (No. 6) and Joe Wiley (No. 8). Kyle Busch takes pole at Pocono LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Kyle Busch turned a lap at 169.485 mph to win the pole for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race Sunday at Pocono Raceway. The winner of two of the last four races, Busch earned his second pole of the season. He won at Richmond last month after starting from the pole. Clint Bowyer qualified second Friday, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. was third. Jeff Burton qualified 13th.
