Gymnastics: Australia to send world medallists to Delhi

SYDNEY, July 22, 2010 (AFP) - - World championship medallists Lauren Mitchell, Prashanth Sellathurai and Philippe Rizzo will lead Australia's gymnastics team for October's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, sports officials said Thursday.

The Australian women's team will be competing for their fourth consecutive team gold medal when they take to the floor at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

Mitchell, 19, last year became the first Australian woman to win a medal in an individual apparatus final at a world championships, with silver on the beam and floor.

Mitchell will be joined in the women's team by fellow Beijing Olympians Georgia Bonora and Ashleigh Brennan, Gymnastics Australia said.

The Australian men will be after their first team gold medal in New Delhi, but will need to break the stronghold of England and Canada.

Four of the five team members from the last Melbourne Commonwealth Games return, while 2006 world high bar champion Rizzo will become the first Australian gymnast to compete at four Commonwealth Games.

Rizzo, 29, began his international career at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games, and over the last three editions has added three gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

The men's team also includes 2006 Commonwealth Games all-around and rings gold medallist Joshua Jefferis, dual world championships pommel horse medallist Sellathurai and national all-around champion Sam Offord.

Beijing Olympian Naazmi Johnston will spearhead the three-member Australian rhythmic team.

Australia are yet to claim a team gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics with Canada winning in 1994 and 2006 and Malaysia in 1998.

Cheer It Up! to celebrate NGD  

National Gymnastics Day is Aug. 7 and Cheer It Up! is celebrating by having a "Cartwheel-a-thon" on the courthouse square from 10 a.m. to noon.

Cheer It Up! will hold tumbling demonstrations and students will be performing as many cartwheels in a row for fundraising efforts for the upcoming competition season.

TCGC holding junior golf clinics

Tahlequah City Golf Course will begin holding junior golf clinics until school starts back up.

During the clinic, golf lessons will be free of charge if players buy a bucket of range balls.

The clinic will be broken into two groups: Tuesday's will be for six- to 13-year olds while Thursday's will be for 14 years and up.

Tahlequah City Golf Course plans on running the clinics until school starts on Aug. 11. If the clinic has early success, it could be continued after school starts with different starting times to be determined.

Tigers hosting BigTime hoops tournament

Tahlequah High School will be hosting a "BigTime Tournament", sponsored by Greg Swaim.

The tournament, labeled "Summer Cruise," will be Saturday and Sunday. The entry fee for each team is $175 and the tournament is open to third through 12th graders.

Each player also receives a free float trip, in addition to two days of basketball.

OU, Nebraska picked 1st in Big 12 preseason poll

DALLAS (AP) — Nebraska has been picked to leave the Big 12 in style.

The Cornhuskers, who are bolting for the Big Ten in 2011, are the unanimous choice to repeat as Big 12 North champions in the league's preseason media poll.

Oklahoma was picked to win the South division in the poll released by the league on Wednesday.

Nebraska, which lost a heartbreaker to Texas in last year's Big 12 title game, received all 26 first-place votes from media members who cover the league. The Sooners got 16 first-place votes in the South, while Texas received the other 10 votes.

Texas A&M was picked to finish third in the South. Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Baylor round out the South field. Missouri was picked second in the North.

Kansas State, Kansas, Colorado and Iowa State were picked to finish third through sixth in the North.

Central Sports and Recreation: Variety of summer camps, programs offered

The Gold Coast Gymnastics girls competition team participated in the 2010 Amateur Athletic Union Age Group National Championships in Orlando. The competition was July 1-3 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Gold Coast entered 33 gymnasts in Level 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 competition. Five gymnasts placed first in their age groups. They were: Level 3 — Kate Pinder, 9, all-around (37.825); Katie Hammang, 10, all-around (37.425); Kelsey Smith, 11, all-around (37.775); Level 5 — Kiana Barbieri, 11, all-around (36.925) and Tori Larbig, 13, all-around (36.925). Gold Coast also had 16 individual champions. They were: Kiana Barbieri, Jaclyn MacDonald, Tori Larbig, Erica Guertin and Monique Paggeot (vault); Kate Pinder, Katie Hammang and Kelsey Smith (bar); Kate Pinder, Molly Hoban, Kiana Barbieri, Jaclyn MacDonald, Tori Larbig and Taylor Kosakowski (balance beam); Kiana Barbieri and Tori Larbig (floor). Also competing for Gold Coast were: Level 2 — Riley Brannon, Isabel Ostrowski, Alexandra Studdard, Rosemary Manning, Nicole Alfaro, Delaney Brannon; Level 3 — Amanda Hyland, Reyna Nixon, Rochelle Paggeot, Sara Magalhaes; Level 4 — Keti Gogolishvili, Destinee Rojas, Meghan MacDonald, Heather Liguori, Nicole Maradona; Level 5 — Julianna Cerbone, Mariami Gogolishvili, Taylor Michie, Megan Call, Ashley Rentz; Level 7 — Autumn Asen. Gold Coast finished with 21 gold medals, 17 silver medals, 17 bronze medals and 64 copper medals. Coaches are Raul Rojas, Jill Rojas, Tim Lamb and Vanessa Bouza. Gold Coast Gymnastics, Inc., 1420 Rupp Lane, Lake Worth, will host an open house Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Okeeheelee Outlaws 13U travel baseball team will hold tryouts Sunday at 9 a.m. at Okeeheelee Park, Field 9. Players cannot turn 14 before May 1, 2011. All spots are open. The National Croquet Center, 700 Florida Mango Road, West Palm Beach, is hosting its Palm Beach County Summer Golf Croquet League. The program will run for five weeks on Tuesday evenings Aug. 3-31. League matches will be held at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and will be followed by a Toast & Tally in the Members' Lounge from 8-9 p.m. Free training and practice will be held Aug. 1 from 3-5 p.m. The league is open to Palm Beach County residents. LeaderCheer Inc. will host a cheerleading camp Monday to July 28 at Gulfstream All Stars Cheer Gym, 7233 Southern Blvd., suburban West Palm Beach.
