2010 Legacies Now in partnership with the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport is investing $2,000 in the Delta Gymnastics Society to deliver a pilot program offering recreational gymnastics to children at the Tsawwassen First Nations reserve.

The Tsawwassen First Nations Gym Program will offer gymnastics training at the Tsawwassen First Nations Recreational Centre for eight weeks over the summer. If successful, the program would be expanded to accommodate upwards of 15 to 20 children and youth on the reserve to improve physical activity and access to programs.

"Physical literacy is the cornerstone of growth, development and well being and is of the utmost importance for our children," said Jeff Vanderkuip, director of recreational and community programs at Delta Gymnastics Society.

"Delta Gymnastics Society believes in seeing that all children are active and by offering this twice-a-week summer program for grades 1 to 5, we expect to achieve this goal."

The Local Sport Program Development Fund is made available to municipalities, community organizations and Aboriginal communities with support from 2010 Legacies Now and the provincial government.

through the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport. More than 1,200 people from around the province will benefit immediately when local organizations receive up to $2,500 to develop new or enhance existing sport programs. Many more will benefit in years to come from the new opportunities created by these programs.

Twelve projects received funding in the April 2009 intake, each demonstrating an ability to attract new participants, provide leadership opportunities and sustain programming in the long term. A list of communities and organizations that received funding include:

· Burnaby - Special Olympics British Columbia (rhythmic gymnastics for youth with disabilities)

· Campbell River - John Howard Society of North Island (youth climbing program)

· Delta - Delta Gymnastics (expanded gymnastics program)

· Fort St. James - Far Fletched Archers (after-school sports program)

· Fort St. John - John Elks Speed Skating Club (expanded skating program)

· Kitwanga - Gitanyow Band Council (aboriginal youth sport program)

· Nakusp - Special Olympics British Columbia (equipment and training for volunteer coaches)

· New Denver - Hills Nordic Ski Club (equipment and coaching improvements)

· Powell River - Powell River Disability Sport Club (opportunities in sport for persons with disabilities)

· Prince George - Prince George Gnats Rugby Football Club (youth rugby program)

· Salmon Arm - Shuswap Ringette Association (youth ringette program)

· Williams Lake - Williams Lake Indian Band (summer baseball program)

"The Local Sport Program Development Fund creates opportunities for youth to engage their potential in a healthy and supportive environment," said Ida Chong, Minister of Healthy Living and Sport. "The Province is excited to support community initiatives throughout B.C. and encourages all British Columbians to adopt healthy and active lifestyles."
