Michigan finishes 25th for Learfield Sports Directors' Cup -- worst ever for U-M Posted: 06 Jul 2010 01:31 PM PDT Former Michigan athletic director Bill Martin spoke often about the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup (formerly the Sears Cup, also known as the all-sports trophy) when he was in office, using it as a measure of U-M's broad-based athletic programs. Dominating in any one or two sports -- regardless of the high profile of football or men's basketball, for instance -- does not tip the scales dramatically. It was an easy boast when the Wolverines were consistently among the best in the country, finishing sixth or higher -- with one exception -- from 1997-98 through 2008-09. This year was another exception. In a year of transition atop the athletic department -- as Martin retired and was replaced by Dave Brandon in March -- U-M teams didn't reach their usual level, finishing 25th among 278 participating NCAA Division I schools. It was U-M's lowest finish since the trophy's inception in 1993-94. The Directors' Cup tabulates points for the season finishes of each school's top 20 sports (10 male and 10 female) for the academic year. Of the Wolverines' 768.50 total points from the fall, winter and spring seasons combined, the majority came from women's teams. Only 93 points came from fall, when only two sports scored points -- women's volleyball (fifth), and women's cross-country (27th). Four top-10 finishes among the spring teams -- women's water polo (sixth), women's tennis (ninth), women's softball (ninth) and women's rowing (10th) -- scored 286 points. U-M got its biggest boost in winter, when the national champion men's gymnastics team scored 100 points. The other big-time winter contributors were men's hockey (fifth), men's swimming (seventh), and women's gymnastics (10th). Stanford won the Division I Directors' Cup for the 16th straight year, with 1,508.50 points. Contact MARK SNYDER: 313-223-3210 or msnyder@freepress.com.
