TANGKAK: Two more high-performance sports schools are being planned to boost sports development among Malaysian students.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Puad Zarkashi said the projects were being planned in Kuantan, Pahang, and Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

Speaking to reporters here Sunday, he said the aim was to increase the number of students who excelled in sports, from about 1,000 now to 2,000.

"At present, we have two sports schools at Bandar Penawar, Kota Tinggi, and Bukit Jalil.

"The two new projects are expected to be completed in the next two years," he said after opening Malaysia Matriculation Colleges 10th Sports Carnival here.

Puad said these schools focussed on the high-performance sports such as badminton, gymnastics and track and field events.

He said at the recent Asian School Games, Malaysia were champions, with its students winning 46 gold medals.

This success has inspired the ministry to emphasise on sports development among students, with plans also underway to produce trainers, he added.

He said besides sport schools, the ministry also planned to build a sport teachers training institute and that about 320 teachers would start their training courses, covering some eight events, in the middle of next year.

"We hope schools, universities and those institutions with sports academies will continue to help produce professional graduates who major in sports-related studies," he added.
