Golfers, sponsors needed for MHS football golf tourney

The Maricopa Rams Football Booster Club invites you to participate in the First Annual Maricopa Rams Football Golf Tournament on Aug. 28 at The Duke at Rancho El Dorado. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m., with check-in beginning at 6:30 a.m. Deadline to register is Aug. 21.

Money raised will go directly to the program to provide proper training and equipment.

Individual participants can take part for $65 each, with $260 covering a full foursome. Hole sponsorship packages are available for $500, which includes one full foursome, a company green sign, and one two-by-three banner that will be displayed at the MHS football field every game throughout the Rams' 2010 season.

Driving range, putting green, and food sponsorships are available for $250 each, which also includes a company sign at the event and a two-by-three banner at home football games. Local organizations and businesses are also encouraged to donate items for the raffle and silent auction.

City offers fall football, soccer, basketball programs

The City of Maricopa is offering the following sports programs during the Fall and Winter seasons.

Adult Flag Football – Ages 18-plus; registration currently through Aug. 6; season Aug. 15 through Oct. 3; $350 per team; NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass, Kick – Ages 8-15; Wedneseday, Sept. 8; Register for free on site; Youth Soccer – Ages 4-15; registration Aug. 16 through Sept. 17; season Oct. 30 through Dec. 18; $45 per child; Youth basketball – Ages 4-15; registration Oct. 18 through Nov. 19; season Jan. 15 through Feb. 26; $45 per child.

Stagecoach Days 'Maricopa Mile & 5K'

Chances for Children AZ presents the Stagecoach Days "Maricopa Mile and 5K," scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 10. The race begins at 8 a.m. at Legacy Traditional School, with the 5k run/walk event running $20 per racer, and the 1 mile kids run at $5 per participant.The event will also house a Family Fitness Fair, with all proceeds from the race benefiting Team Fit Kids Maricopa.

Registration currently open for City fall, winter activities

The City of Maricopa's Fall and Winter 2010-11 activity guide is now available online at www.maricopa-az.gov (under "Government," select "community services").

Activities available this fall/winter fall under the following categories: sports, health and fitness, dance and gymnastics, art and music, general interest and training and certification. In all, more than 65 activities are available for city residents to enjoy.

'Relay for Life' coming to Maricopa

The American Cancer Society's signature event – "Relay for Life" – is coming to Maricopa for the first time on March 25-26, 2011.

As the world's largest grassroots fundraising movement, "Relay for Life" mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and provide participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease.

Maricopa will host the community's inaugural "Relay for Life" on March 25-26, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., at the Maricopa High School Football Stadium. Local team seeks sponsors, riders, for 'Tour de Cure'

The WalMart/Sam's Club team, led by Maricopa resident and team captain Keith Monk, is looking for sponsors and riders for next year's American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure, presented by Charles Schwab.

The eighth annual race is scheduled for Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Reach 11 Sports Complex in North Phoenix.

Final weekly track series takes place

The final Adirondack Runners Weekly Track Series was highlighted by four runners who ran 50 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters

Ally Buser (age 10) had times of 9.2 seconds, 17.6, 40.1 and 1:33.3 for the distances. McKenzie Collier (10) had times of 8.5, 16.2, 36.8, 1:31.4, Stephanie Meehan (9) posted times of 8.2, 16.5, 36.7 and 1:30.2.

Maddie Rohne (6) ran times of 10.2, 21.0, 49.4 and 1:55.5. Gillian Hayden (12) ran the 50, 100 and 200 meters in the times of 9.3, 17.5 and 39.0, while 8-year-old Brooke Wright ran the same distances in 9.9, 19.7 and 47.4.

Emma Caprood (7) ran times of 10.6 for 50 meters and 20.6 for 100 meters. Madison Sheehan (5) ran 50 meters in 13.9, 100 meters in 27.5 and 400 meters in 2:47.9.

Several relay teams enjoyed the 4-by-100 meters relay: 5-year-olds Charlie Cann, Madison Sheehan, Ava Hubany and Alex Ramo ran the course in 1:57.1. The Kashmirs - Julia (5), Jake (3) and Sophia (7), along with Maddie Rohn (6), ran it in 1:52.6.

The team of Bergen Caprood (4), Annika Schermerhorn (5), Madeline Cox (6) and Reilly Brodt (6) ran the relay in 2:09.9, while the team of Kristin Rohne (10), with the Ryans - Mack (5), Maggie (7) and Mae (9) - ran it in 1:27.3.

Reserve picnic tables for Travers

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The New York Racing Association announced that 10 percent of the highly sought after picnic tables located in the backyard of Saratoga Race Course will be set aside for reserved seating on Travers Day, Saturday, Aug. 28.

Through the "Travers Tables" online advance reservation system, racing fans will have the opportunity to register for the right to purchase a reserved picnic table on Travers Day. Fifty registrants will be randomly selected from all eligible entries for the option to purchase one of the designated picnic tables, which will be located in a special reserved premium section adjacent to the Paddock and Big Red Spring.

The reserved tables will be available for purchase for $100. All proceeds will benefit the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.

Fans can register at no cost for the right to purchase a Travers Day picnic table at www.nyra.com. Registration closes on Saturday at 6 p.m. Contest winners will be randomly selected and will be notified via email on Sunday.

The selected individuals will have until Aug. 19 at noon to exercise the right to purchase a reserved picnic table on Travers Day.

Reservation holders can claim their table on Travers Day from 7 a.m. until noon at the Reserved Seating Office, located at Gate A, on Union Avenue.

Tables are strictly limited to a maximum of six people. No additional chairs, tables or pop-up tents will be permitted in the reserved area.

Table price does not include the cost of general admission.

Tables cannot be transferred or resold. Limit one entry per household.

Wash. Co. Nationals third in tournament

HERSHEY, Pa.-- The 18U Washington County Nationals finished third in the Black Monster Brigade Tournament on Sunday.

They wrapped up the tournament with a 6-4 loss to Ocean City, N.J. Mike Resetar of Granville pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing just one earned run and striking out eight.

Greenwich's John Harrington and Granville graduate Connor Hoagland each singled and drove in a run. Chris Grieve doubled.
