Hong Kong pulled out of the women's baseball World Cup on Saturday, a day after one of its players was wounded by a stray bullet during a game in Caracas, Venezuela.

Organizers decided to move all remaining games to the central city of Maracay and away from the Fort Tiuna military base in Caracas, where Cheuk Woon Yee was wounded Friday, Venezuela Sports Minister Hector Rodriguez said.

The bullet struck Cheuk as she was taking the field to play third base in the fourth inning against the Netherlands on Friday and was lodged in her calf. She reportedly is in good condition.

All of Saturday's games were suspended while officials stepped up security and considered when to resume play.

AUTO RACING:

Keselowski tops Edwards

Brad Keselowski took the lead on a restart with eight laps to go and pulled away to win the NASCAR Nationwide race at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. Carl Edwards finished second, barely edging Kyle Busch.

Keselowski and Edwards raced side-to-side for a large portion of the race without incident. Both are on probation for a high-profile confrontation at Gateway International Raceway last month.

It was another rough day for Danica Patrick, who went down a lap to the leaders early on and struggled to a 27th-place finish.

TENNIS:

Federer, Murray advance

Roger Federer reached today's final of the Rogers Cup in Toronto with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 semifinal win over Novak Djokovic. Federer will meet defending champion Andy Murray, who beat Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-4.

• Andy Roddick said a blood test he had was positive for mononucleosis.

MISCELLANEOUS:

U.S. turns on the speed

A 32-4 advantage in fast-break points sparked the United States past China 98-51 in a basketball scrimmage at Madison Square Garden. Danny Granger led the U.S. with 22 points; Derrick Rose scored 12.

• Jean Pascal (26-1) retained his WBC light heavyweight title by beating Chad Dawson (29-1) on points in Montreal. The fight was stopped in the 11th round after an accidental clash of heads opened a deep cut above Dawson's right eye.

• Rebecca Bross won the U.S. women's gymnastics title, scoring 120.3 to outdistance Mattie Larson by 3.3 points during competition in Hartford, Conn.

• David Boudia set an American record with 605.40 points while winning the 10-meter title at the U.S. national diving championships in College Station, Texas.

• Russell Baze, North America's winningest thoroughbred jockey, rode the 11,000th winner of his career in Santa Rosa, Calif.•

Watching gymnastics as TV analyst stokes competitive fire in Olympic champion Nastia Liukin

HARTFORD, Conn. – Nastia Liukin is spending much of the Visa Championships perched prettily on an orange couch. Gymnasts plop down next to the reigning Olympic all-around champion on the XL Center set for post-competition interviews on Universal Sports.

With her flowing blond hair and skinny high heels paired with her gymnastics expertise, Liukin looks and convincingly plays the part of TV analyst. She's also cheering on Plano gymmate Rebecca Bross, coached by Liukin's father, Valeri, who enters tonight's senior women's finals with a dominating lead.

But Liukin, who first competed at the national championships when she was 12 and won senior all-around titles in 2005 and 2006, isn't used to watching the meet from this perspective. And she's not convinced she she likes it.

"Doing this commentating and hosting the show, doing the autograph sessions and my clothing line, I love it," Liukin said. "But it always takes me back to my gymnastics career. That's where my heart is. I have that passion for it. It really is hard to sit here and watch."

Hmm. Hearing London 2012, anyone?

Liukin, who turns 21 in October, refuses to rule anything out, though she's not nearly as emphatic about competing in a second Olympics as she was even a year ago. She could come back and try to defend her all-around title in London. Or she could come back in a limited number of events. Her signature event is the uneven bars, in which the current U.S. team is greatly lacking.

But she could also go on with the rest of her life. If Liukin was in the gym every day, she wouldn't have a clothing line (Supergirl by Nastia at JC Penney) to promote.

Returning to competition after so much time away is brutal in gymnastics. The Visa Championships were held at American Airlines Center last year to honor Liukin. She competed only on the balance beam, perhaps feeling pressure to do something. Meanwhile, most of Beijing's best were still figuring out what comes next.

Liukin hasn't competed since.

But London is now less than two years away. A decision has to come sometime.

Her timeline: the end of this year.

"I'll be in London commentating or competing," Liukin said. "But I do know if I'm sitting in the stands and I know I didn't give it another shot, I'll regret it. I don't like to live with regrets.

"But I'm not committing to anything. I don't want to make a commitment and not live up to it for myself and everyone else."

Valeri Liukin, also Nastia's coach, said there's no telling what his only daughter will decide.

"Nastia's over my head now," he said, smiling.

When Nastia Liukin is home – she has her own place now in Plano, which the self-proclaimed neat freak loves to decorate – she always heads to World Olympic Gymnastics Academy to work out. She also helps Valeri with his current gymnasts, including Bross.

After this month, she plans to get to the gym more regularly to prepare for the Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular, an Oct. 3 show at Allen Event Center with Evan Lysacek, her "good friend" and the 2010 Olympic gold medalist in men's figure skating.

The training could provide a gauge on how she feels about committing to try again.

Tonight, Liukin will be cheering on Bross and hanging out on the couch.

And only she can decide if that's where she's comfortable remaining.

THE other day I had the chance to meet a long time friend, Odette Velarde, who now works with Samsung, at a golf tournament the company hosted, and organized by Boy Blue Ocampo, at the Villamor Golf Club.

Odette and I go way back, during her adidas days, when she had numerous projects I was able to help out. Now, she is busy with Samsung's commitment to sports, golf in particular.

The company continues their support for local golf through its tournaments like the Samsung Amateur Tour, the Samsung Interscholastic Golf Championships, and the Samsung Philippines, where the country's best players show their wares.

During the small gathering, Samsung announced that they will be a presentor of the Davao National Pro-Am golf tournament, which has P1 million as prize money, on Sept. 1 to 3 at the Apo Golf and Country Club.

The winning pro gets P172,000 while the amateur partner receives P20,000 worth of merchandise.

This is the very first venture of Samsung in a pro event.

This project was initiated by Jimmy del Rosario, golfing chairman of Emcor, the co-presentor, in his desire to help the local pros and provide a competition forhis clients.

Philippine sports needs more patrons like Samsung to jumpstart different sports disciplines.

From Aug. 14 to 26, Singapore will be host to the very first Youth Olympic Games, an event exclusively for the very best athletes around the world aged 14 to 18, and will comprise all the Olympics sports, but with fewer events.

So expect to see youngsters compete in aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoe-kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling.

These events will be played on a smaller scale, like basketball will be using the 3-on-3 format.

The YOG, as it is fondly being called, is an event that targets the youth, balancing sport, education and culture.

It aims to educate the young based on Olympic values: friendship, fair play, non-violence and a rejection of any form of doping.

The YOG wants to bring together the youth to participate in the highest level of competition possible, but also to educate them on the Olympic values, the benefits of sports for a healthy lifestyle, the social values sports can bring, the dangers of doping, and excess training or of inactivity.

A total of 3,200 athletes and 800 officials are expected to troop to Singapore, for the event which hopes to inspire young people around the world to participate in sports.

The Philippines will be represented in swimming (Jasmine Alkhaidi, Jessie Lacuna), basketball (Ray Parks, Jeron Teng, Michael Pate, and Michael Tolomia), weightlifting (Patricia Llena), taekwondo (Kirk Barbosa) and tennis (Jeson Patrombon).

I, on the other hand, was tapped to cover the games by Singapore-based Starhub, so I will be in the thick of the action for the next two weeks.

Here's hoping our local delegation makes some waves in their events!
