St. Louis will host the 2012 USA Gymnastics Championships, June 6-9 at Chaifetz Arena. The St. Louis Sports Commission partnered with Chaifetz Arena in bidding for the event.

"We're really excited about the event being at Chaifetz," Sports Commission President Frank Viverito said. "The intimacy of that building is going to make the event really special." He added that USA Gymnastics seemed to like Chaifetz because it also offered extensive practice facilities.

The national championships will be part of the process for selecting the members of the U.S. team for the London Olympics. Athletes who compete here will advance to the Olympic Trials the following month in San Jose, Calif.

The nationals will be broadcast by NBC and Universal Sports. St. Louis previously hosted the national gymnastics championships in 2000.

"The furthering of St. Louis' Olympic legacy is important to us, so we ask, 'What can we bring to the region to further that legacy?'" Viverito said. "We're drawn to gymnastics because of the interest and visibility. It's been a number of years since the championships were here. Since the team was so successful in Beijing, we wanted to give young athletes and fans a chance to see it in 2012."

U.S. athletes collected 10 gymnastics medals in 2008 in Beijing, America's largest haul since 1984.

Viverito noted that St. Louis also would host an NCAA men's basketball regional and the NCAA Division I wrestling tournament in the spring of 2012.

USA Gymnastics also announced Thursday that St. Paul, Minn., would host the 2011 championships.
