Ex-Modesto gymnastics coach faces jail after molestation plea Posted: 01 Sep 2010 05:09 PM PDT A former Modesto gymnastics coach faces 45 days in Santa Clara County Jail and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life after pleading no contest to molesting a 17-year-old gymnast during a meet in San Jose. A judge sentenced Sean Gilham, 54, to the jail time, plus another 45 days of house arrest, on Aug. 24 for felony false imprisonment and a misdemeanor charge of annoying or molesting a child. Gilham will begin serving his sentence Oct. 1, said Amy Cornell, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. Modesto police arrested Gilham last October after the girl reported her coach blocked her from leaving her San Jose hotel room, then molested her during a team trip. San Jose police say the girl was able to convince Gilham to stop and then escape the room. Gilham, who co-owned Acro Sports of Modesto at 1514 Princeton Ave., coached and participated in sports acrobatics, a combination of gymnastics and acrobatics. Superior Court Judge Kenneth Shapero imposed a restriction at Gilham's sentencing - that Gilham never be allowed to work with children under the age of 18 again. "(That was) what was especially important to us, as well as to the family of the victim," Cornell said. "Anywhere (Gilham) goes, even if he moves somewhere, he has to re-register. He will be in a database for life." The victim's father declined to comment on the sentencing. He said neither he nor his daughter, now 18 years old, were not in court for Gilham's sentencing.
