Heritage gymnastics future still up in the air Posted: 08 Sep 2010 07:11 AM PDT Supporters of Heritage High School gymnastics are still waiting for answers this morning. A policy drafted for Tuesday night's East Allen County Schools' meeting regarding the future of the school's program, was tabled until more details could be worked out. Earlier this summer, board members voted to discontinue funding for the gymnastics program at Heritage. Other schools in the district including Harding and Leo high schools also have done away with their gymnastics programs because of lack of participation and funding. Since the vote, Heritage parents and gymnasts have been raising money to fund the program themselves. Board members had discussed implementing a "pay to play" policy but chose not to do so this year. The team, with support of some board members, wants to continue to use Heritage facilities for practice. Board President Janice Witte said other sports in the district are not allowed to use the schools' facilities for practice and don't receive transportation provided by the district. Board member Terry Jo Lightfoot expressed her frustration that this was a topic board members are still discussing and that by voting for the policy, it would go back on its previous vote. She said the board has bigger issues to address. Other businessAt the board's next meeting Sept. 21, Superintendent Karyle Green will recommend a plan to redesign the district. A possible board vote could follow. In June, EACS unveiled five plans for restructuring the district's facilities which included closing schools and building new ones. Since then, members have solicited community feedback. The board also approved the capital projects fund and bus replacement portions of the budget after a public hearing Tuesday. Kirby Stahly, the district's business manager, said the law requires the board to approve these portions of the budget before Sept. 20, also before it approves a redesign plan. The district will be able to make amendments to these budgets after the approval of a redesign plan. For its bus replacement fund, the district will request about $1.6 million and $15.7 million for its capital projects fund. In October, the board will vote on the district's total budget of $89 million, a decrease of $4 million from last year. Stahly also showed the board and those in attendance a way to calculate the $8 million proposed referendum's effects on property tax bills. The calculator is available through the Department of Local Government Finance.
