I'd almost lost count how many times I'd been left disappointed over the years as AP kept missing out on the big one. Now he's won the Grand National and finished the year with the Sports Personality crown. Congratulations! From Birmingham - goodnight. Quagmire on 606 : "AP McCoy: Over 3,000 career wins, the finest jockey in the history of the sport, and the winner of the biggest Horse racing event of the year. A deserved winner. " Sports Personality winner AP McCoy: "This is an unbelievable feeling to be standing in front of so many amazing sports people. To win this award is very surreal and obviously it could not have been achieved without the help of so many people. I have so many people to thank. I work in a wonderful sport - they probably spent most of the night voting for me. Without trainer Jonjo O'Neill I wouldn't have won the Grand National. I'd like to thank my wife and my family. But more amazing than winning the award is my daughter at home. I know she'll be watching at home and I just want to say how amazing she is. I have so many people to thank." BBC SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR 2010: AP McCoy Sports Personality 2010 second place: Phil Taylor Sports Personality 2010 third place: Jessica Ennis 2057: So who did you vote the 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year? Let's find out. David Beckham: "I'm obviously really humbled to receive an award for something I love doing. I am very humbled. To receive it from Sir Bobby - I am truly honoured. Without the teams and players, such as Ryan Giggs standing next to me, I wouldn't be here today. I've been lucky enough to play with great teams such as Preston, Manchester United, Real Madrid , AC Milan and LA Galaxy - and of course playing for England. I've also always been lucky enough to play under some of the great coaches like Eric Harrison and Nobby Stiles. The best manager in football for me was and still is Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. I'd also like to thank my family and friends and my wife and children. My wife Victoria has given me three amazing children and her support is truly inspirational." Manchester United great Sir Bobby Charlton who presented the award to Beckham: He is a very, very pleasant person and a good man. I met him when he was nine and I gave him a test with others. He passed with flying colours." 2046: Tears from David Beckham's wife Victoria. Great ovation from the crowd at the LG Arena and he deserves it. I'm holding the waterworks back. Colin Montgomerie: "I'd like to thank the players and also the coaches - the unsung heroes I guess. It has been a fantastic year for European golf. It's a privilege to be here and receive this award on behalf of the European Tour." Rafael Nadal: "I'm really sorry I can't be there tonight. It's an honour to win this award. Thanks to the BBC. It's a dream to be among the list of great champions." 2032: The Overseas award now - any ideas? Sports Personality top 10 contender Lee Westwood: "It's the pinnacle of any person's career to say you're at the top of your sport. The Ryder Cup will always bring out an emotionally charged atmosphere. This year we had a fantastic team." 2028: We're on to top 10 contender and world number one golfer Lee Westwood. Lovely tributes from his nearest and dearest. Ex-England cricketer Andrew Flintoff speaking on behalf of Sports Personality top 10 contender Graeme Swann: "It's not too often ex-Australia spinner Shane Warne says something nice about an English bloke, so when he pays tribute to Graeme then you know our guy is a great player. He's taken his chance at England level and I don't think his influence has come to an end in this Ashes series. I think we'll win 3-1." 2022: They've just had cricket montage and now it's the turn of Sports Personality top 10 contender Graeme Swann. Not a bad year for Swanny. He obviously couldn't make it tonight. Sports Personality top 10 contender Jessica Ennis: "I had an amazing 2009. I just wanted to prove myself that I could perform well again after injury. Missing Beijing was a massive disappointment, but it has made me stronger and I can't wait for London 2012." Europe Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie: "It's an honour for me to be here on behalf of the team. Nobody has mentioned enough that there were three times as many as there are here on that extra day's play on Monday. We'd like to thank them." 2012: So have you made your mind up yet? Tough isn't it? There are more contender films to come. Sports Personality top 10 contender Graeme McDowell: "It's great to have the family here. To have my dad run on after I won the US Open, especially on Father's Day, was a fantastic feeling. Regarding the Ryder Cup, without my team-mates I wouldn't have got the chance to make that putt." Arsenal and Spain player Cesc Fabregas (hot-footing it from the Spoty production office): "Winning the World Cup is a feeling you can't express until you win it. The togetherness makes the team Spain team special - we all play for each other." 2003: Luther and The Wire star is looking back at the World Cup - I'm not sure whether England will been seen in such a good light. 2001: James Corden aka Smithy from Gavin and Stacey is at it again. A few red faces around. Hilarious though. On serious note, he pays a lovely tribute to Sport Relief which raised millions for disadvantaged people this year. Sports Personality top 10 contender Phil Taylor: "I'm getting on a bit - getting ready for retirement. I love the competitiveness of darts though. The sport has been very kind to me." 1957: Great entrance by darts world champion Phil Taylor - shakes Europe captain Colin Montgomerie's hands. Touch. Marc via text on 81111: "What are the odds on the England football team winning team of the year? Ermmmmm Basketball coach Lance Haggith: "I'd like to say there's not enough recognition to volunteers throughout the UK. This is to the unsung heroes whether your helping sport or those less able." 1949: I've been getting a few texts alerting me to the fact that the phone voting lines are jammed. Sorry to hear - we've received a lot of calls as you can understand. Please continue trying. Boxer Joe Calzaghe speaking on behalf of Sports Personality top 10 contender David Haye: "What he brings punching power and speed. I love watching him fight." Tom Daley: "I'd like to thank my physios and coaches. It's been tough year for me regarding injury. To go to the Commonwealths was great and to come away with two golds from was amazing." 1942: So who do you think will win the Young Sports Personality title? Sports Personality top 10 contender Amy Williams: "I remembered what I did in training then went out on the sled and did a job. It was fingers crossed and hope that I would do my very best. There's a massive team supporting me." 1936: From a sprinting legend on two wheels to Amy Williams - a speed queen on the ice. Sports Personality top 10 contender Mark Cavendish: "It gets harder every year. I'm only little and I've got guys headbutting me as I'm sprinting to the line. When you cross that finish line it just comes out. I train sometimes by playing chess because you have to make sharp decisions." Sir Frank Williams: "It was great to win the first race and the first championship and good to be here next to my technical chief Patrick Head who designed those wonderful cars." John From London Town MBE on 606 : "I've always enjoyed this show, love watching it. Nice build up to the Apprentice too" BBC One, 2100 GMT for The Apprentice final. 1925: Arsenal midfield ace Cesc Fabregas has just walked into the production office. I might ask him if he would like to do the my live commentary for a bit. Sports Personality top 10 contender AP McCoy: "Hard to describe what it felt like when I won the National. I'm lucky enough to have been champion jockey for 15 years and lucky enough to beat Sir Gordon Richards' record. To finally win the National - it was an unbelievable day." 1921: Great double by teenage diver Tom Daley at the Commonwealths. And now on to the fantastic Grand National win for AP McCoy. Sports Personality top 10 contender Tom Daley: "I've got so much competition experience now. That amount of experience will help me going into the 2012 Olympics." 1913: A superb intro for Europe's successful Ryder Cup team from singer Katherine Jenkins and a lovely tribute from golf legend Seve Ballesteros. Love to see that guy back fully fit. Anon via text on 81111: "Some guests do care about the snow. Scotland's triple CG and World Championship medallist Jen McIntosh has been at Aberdeen airport for over six hours waiting on flight and has finally had to concede defeat. She is absolutely gutted at not making it to SPOTY, so give her a special mention!" Sorry to hear. I hope things improve for Jen! 1904: The top 10 are being introduced to the crowd. It's a shame world heavyweight champion David Haye couldn't make it. There have been a lot of sick people in this office too in the last few days. Anon via text on 81111: "MATT CARDLE!" He's not here and, no, he's not one of the top 10 contenders. 1901: Ahh... the music... the cheers. Welcome to the 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. 1858: This is it guys - are you ready? BBC One, online and BBC Radio 5 live. Here's our Christmas treat for you. 1847: Singer Katherine Jenkins - looking splendid in radiant red - has been introduced to the packed LG Arena. She will be performing later... 1845: Now for a few Fight Club rules. Although you guys can debate the top 10 on 606, Twitter etc etc - I can't, in order to remain impartial, but I will do my best to get your opinions of the show and the other awards posted here during the duration of the commentary. I think my colleague Jonathan Stevenson aka Stevo was surprised Nottingham Forest's Lewis McGugan failed to make the shortlist! 1839: The presenters have just been introduced to a packed arena - bit of a warm-up before the real intros. I'm very impressed with the stage - prepare to be wowed. 1830: Omari and Sukhpeet, backstage at the LG Arena as part of School Report team , have just had the most remarkable introduction to journalism ever. They've just bagged an exclusive interview with none other than David Beckham as he came in to the building, which will be up on the website later this evening. Not content with that, the boys also spoke with the likes of Tony McCoy, Colin Montgomerie, Freddie Flintoff and Ryan Giggs. Not bad for their first assignment. 1824: I'm wearing a grey suit, with a stripey light blue-and-white tie placed around the collar of a crisp white shirt. I am also wearing black shoes and socks. Beat that Becks! 1821: I've got some more from Keogh and The Beckhams coming up right about... Amir Mir- It's Time To Break Into The Top 4 on 606 : "Does anyone know who will give Beckham his Life Time achievement award? Sir Alex should I reckon." I know who it is - it promises to be a bit of a tearjerker. 1802: Some of you may be wondering: "How on earth did they arrive at the 10?". I can tell you. Sports experts from newspapers and magazines were asked to send in their top 10s before careful calculations came up with the definitive shortlist. Aussie Open finalist Andy Murray, world gymnastics champion Beth Tweddle and double European athletics champion Mo Farah all failed to make the final 10. These experts are tough to please eh? 1751: Now then, the contenders for this year's Sports Personality of the Year crown (in alphabetical order): cyclist Mark Cavendish, diver Tom Daley, heptathlete Jessica Ennis, boxer David Haye, jockey AP McCoy, golfer Graeme McDowell, cricketer Graeme Swann, darts player Phil Taylor, golfer Lee Westwood, and bob skeleton racer Amy Williams. The winner will be decided by you folk via a phone vote. The numbers will be announced during the show. I really can't call this - no pun intended. wehateowls on 606 : "Coach of the Year Prize can only go to 1 person and that is Ian Holloway for the miracle job he has done and is still doing at Blackpool." It'll be interesting to see who wins that one - there are a few contenders. 1733: Popped over to main reception area earlier, the guests had already started streaming in - a who's who of sport. Here's the deal - eight awards will be presented on the night: Helen Rollason, Young Personality, Unsung Hero, Team of the Year, Overseas Personality, Coach of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and last, but not least, the main award. By now we know that footballer David Beckham has been honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award. It promises to be a special moment in the show. Is that a tear in my eye or is someone chopping onions nearby? 1730: Well, the weather outside is frightful But the sports stars arriving look delightful They couldn't care less about snow Spoty go! Spoty go! Spoty go!
