TOKYO —

Gymnast Kohei Uchimura, winner of the men's individual all-around title at two consecutive world championships, will join the Konami group this spring, Konami Sports & Life Co announced Wednesday. Another Japan team member at last year's championships, Koji Yamamuro, 21, will also join Konami after graduating from Nippon Sport Science University together with Uchimura, 22, in March, it said.

The pair will be employed by Konami, whose business interests include sports and leisure, electronic entertainment and gaming, and compete for its corporate gymnastics team. Having earlier considered enrolling in graduate school, Uchimura decided to enter a new training environment while preparing for the 2012 London Olympic Games, where he is expected to be in the running for individual and team gold medals.

Half of the six members of Japan's men's team at the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam belong to Konami.

The California Golden Bear women's gymnastics team opens the 2011 season at the Pac-10 Showcase on Saturday, Jan. 9 in Los Angeles, a meet featuring all seven Conference teams with a highlights show airing on a tape-delayed basis on Fox Sports Net/Comcast Bay Area.

For the first time, the Pac-10 gymnastics teams will face off against one another in a season-opening event. Fox Sports Net will film the action with a highlights show airing at various times in various markets. In the Bay Area, the "Pac-10 Gymnastics Showcase" will air on Comcast Bay Area at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 15.

The Bears return all of their top gymnasts from last season. Senior Avery Gee, who earned second team All-Pac-10 honors in the all-around last season, returns for her fourth season with the Bears. Gee, who competed at regionals in the floor in 2009, tied for the highest Cal mark of the season last year with a 9.850 on the floor. Gee finished strong in 2010, posting her top all-around mark of the season at the Pac-10 Championships.

The Bears will also look to a pair of experienced juniors to contribute this season. Erica Varon has competed in multiple events for the Bears in every single meet since her freshman year. Varon was one of Cal's top balance beam performers, earning a high mark of 9.775 last season in the event. Rounding out the junior class is Alex Leggitt. Leggitt has worked her way into being a crucial member of the Cal rotation. Leggitt led all Bears last season on the beam, earning a 9.825 in the final dual meet of the season. She also steadily improved on floor, finishing with Cal's fourth highest mark (9.750).

Cal also has a veteran sophomore squad who got plenty of experience their rookie season. Madisyn O'Brien was an all-arounder for Cal last year from the first meet of the season through their final dual. O'Brien was one of Cal's stronger vaulters, finishing the season with the No. 2 mark in the event (9.775). Arla Rosenzweig also was a force on the vault, turning in a top mark of 9.725. Stina Olivere was limited to competing in one event for Cal last season, the bars, but she made it count. Olivere has the top mark of the season in the event (9.775). Chelsea Spomer missed the first five meets of the season, but made a late surge, helping the team on vault and beam. Mariesah Pierce and Nikki Lew both made an immediate impact on the beam, bringing strong graceful routines and solid scores in their debut seasons. Pierce also excelled on the floor exercise, tying with Avery Gee for the top mark of the season with a 9.850 on the floor. Pierce competed three times as an all-arounder, ending up with Cal's second highest total of the season (38.600).

The Bears' first home meet of the season will be Friday, January 14 when they host UC Davis and San Jose State in a tri-meet at 7:30 in Haas Pavilion. All seats for all home gymnastics meets this season are free, so make plans to come out and cheer on the 2011 Bears.
