SEATTLE - Each week, gymnastics coach Joanne Bowers will break down a part of her sport that many sports fans outside of gymnastics might not be familiar with. This is the chance for Husky Nation to learn more about the great sport of gymnastics. This week, we will take a look at the team's bar routines vs. Oklahoma on Jan. 28.

Watch the video and follow along with the descriptions of the bars routines below and why they were deducted.

Most of our routines have major releases and big dismounts (D's are worth .1 bonus and E's are worth .2 bonus). We are hitting our routines very well with. Small deductions on hitting handstands, small form errors and dismount landings are the things we are working to improve.

Routine No. 1: Aliza Vaccher - score 9.725, start value of 10.0, but she does not have a major release. Aliza was tight and clean during the first half of routine, but got loose on overshoot to handstand, toe hecht to high bar could be higher, short on last handstand before dismount (E- full out- tuck position), and never opened the dismount before landing, small step forward.

Routine No. 2: Amanda Cline - score 9.6, start value 10.0. Her first handstand was a little short of making it all the way to handstand, then she pulled in on geinger (major release D) and caught bar close with not much swing, bail to handstand was good, last handstand short, giant full not done in handstand and legs loose and apart, dismount is a basic 2/1 back tuck (C), feet were flexed and small step on landing.

Routine No. 3: Lauren Rogers - score 9.675, start value of 10.0 but she does not have a major release. Short first handstand, giant ½ and giant 1/1 very good, bail to handstand good, last handstand very loose and archy and short, dismount (E-2/1 front) went back instead of up and took big step back on landing.

Routine No. 4: Kristen Linton - score 9.75, start value of 10.0. Mount could show more amplitude over the low bar, archy first handstand, everything else very nice--good handstand positions and tight body (stalder Higgins to invert grip (D)+ major release jaeger (D), dismount (E-full out-tuck position)high and good technique but probably a slight deduction for not showing control on landing before saluting judges.

Routine No. 5: Samantha Walior - score 9.775, start value of 10.0. First handstand was a little short, very nice jaeger, bail to handstand could be tighter, blind change a little loose during turn, dismount (E-2/1 front)good but big step forward on landing.

Routine No. 6: Ruby Engreitz - score 9.675, start value of 10.0. Could show more amplitude on mount, nice geinger (major release D), giant full finished a little late, pac salto (D) was nice, dismount (E-full out-layout position) showed really good position but didn't rotate as well and landed a little short with a big step forward.

Gymnastics prepares for two top ten teams

ASU gymnastics will need poise, focus and endurance as it faces a tough road test Friday night and then another meet Sunday at home.

The Sun Devils (1-1, 0-1 Pac-10) first head to Salt Lake City to take on No. 3 Utah (3-1, 1-1) in an environment that will be a significant test of ASU's confidence.

"It's absolutely amazing to compete in Utah," senior Mary Atkinson said. "They basically sell out their basketball stadium for their gymnastics meets."

ASU must tighten up its routines for Friday's Pac-10 meet in order to raise its scores from a Jan. 28 victory over Brown.

"We do need to pull off a pretty big score this weekend because we have to count three away meet scores [as part of qualification for regionals]," senior Brittany Schuett said. "We haven't quite gotten to the overall score that we want to be at yet."

Utah is coming off a loss to No. 2 Stanford on Jan. 28 that came down to less than a half point. The loss ended a 20 dual home regular season win streak for the Utes.

However, the Sun Devils know exactly what they need to work on in order to raise their overall scores.

"[We need to] not count a fall, to start with," Atkinson said. "Also, there are areas where we can clean up landings, stick dismounts, hit handstands on bars and not take any kind of major wobble or balance check on beam."

ASU has made several adjustments during practice in preparation for this weekend.

"This week, we've been focusing a lot on our presentation and making sure our dance on floor is engaging for the judges, for the audience," Atkinson said. "We've been training beam aggressively. We don't want to get up there and be worried about a fall; we want to go up there and do our beam routine almost with a little bit of an attitude."

In addition to serving as an early benchmark, the road trip will give the Sun Devils time to grow closer as a team.

"It's a lot of fun," Schuett said. "We usually do a team activity before the meet. I'm not sure what we're doing this time, but it's typically shopping or something along that nature."

Following the competition against the Utes, ASU will return home to take on No. 7 Oregon State (2-1, 0-1) on Sunday inside Wells Fargo Arena.

The Beavers recently lost to defending national champion UCLA by less than a tenth of a point.

"I think being mentally prepared for [two meets in one weekend] is going to be the biggest key," Atkinson said. "But I think as far as our fitness, our team is as fit as we've ever been, so we should be able to handle it on a physical level."

Following Sunday's meet, ASU's next competition is on Feb. 11 versus Cal at home.
