This week, Replays glances back 25 years at the highlights of the conclusion of the local winter sports scene from February and March of 1985.

Wrestling, Swimming,

Gymnastics

At the 1985 state wrestling meet in Missoula, Helena High's Brad Bruno and Bryan Simpson both placed runner-up in their respective weight classes. Bruno lost to four-time champion T.J. Campbell of Great Falls High in the 105-pound finals, while Simpson was shaded by C.M. Russell's Bill Barnhill for the 145 title.

Teammate Albert Olsen placed third at 167.

The Bengals tallied 64½ points to place 10th, with Capital High close behind in 11th, scoring 50½.

Capital got place-winning performances from John Ivanovitch and Steve Olson. Ivanovitch finished third at 132, and Olson took fourth at 112.

In the B/C tourney, Townsend 105-pounder Rob Lewis placed runner-up, while Kerry Hanna of Boulder finished fifth at 155.

Former Bruin AA titlist Lonnie Burt, Montana State Bobcats' heavyweight, placed second at the Big Sky Conference championships for the second year in a row.

Capital sophomore swimmers Kurt Mihelish and Gail MacKinnon each splashed to second-place finishes, while producing the top local performances at the State swim meet.

MacKinnon, who also took third in the 500 freestyle, led the Bruin ladies to a sixth-place finish. Her 200 IM time of 2:24.88 broke her own school record by over a second. The Capital 200 medley relay unit of MacKinnon, Aimee Lamphier, Katie Hanson and Stacie Ranstrom placed fourth.

Helena's Samantha Swor finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke.

Mihelish lowered the Bruins' 100 backstroke record by two seconds, clocking a 2:07.67. He also placed fourth in the 200 IM to help the Bruins to an eight-place showing.

Derek Blankmeyer of the Bengals took fifth in the 100 breast.

At the State Gymnastics Meet in Great Falls 25 years ago, Helena's girls and boys' teams both placed runner-up, led by Lori Schneider, Tim Fromm and Ken Holshue.

Schneider finished third in the all-around, while taking second in the vault and floor exercise. Bengal teammates Collette Sicotte placed sixth all-around and fourth on the balance beam; Theresa Downs took fifth in the vault; and Tina Barrett came in fourth in the floor.

Fromm, a sophomore, placed second in the parallel bars, high bar and all-around. He also finished third in the pommel horse, vault and rings.

Holshue, who was third in the all-around, took second in the vault, and third on the bars and floor.

For the Bruin ladies, Carla Marcinek came in fourth in the all-around, placing third on the floor and fifth on the beam. Amie Halverson was sixth on the floor.

Capital's boys were led by Brian Kenny, who came in seventh on the parallel bars, ninth on the high bar and ninth all-around.

Basketball

Although the girls basketball season was still played in the fall back then, Replays has taken the liberty of including female hoops here in order to coincide with the present-day schedule.

The 1984-85 state champion Helena girls were renowned for their balanced scoring attack. The Bengals had six players averaging eight points or better, led by Tammi Sutliffe at 10.7 points and Karen Gross' 10.3, followed by Leslie Ursich, Brenda Toner, Lisa Downs and Kari Kockler.

At the state tourney, Helena prevailed in the title game over Great Falls High, 60-48 for the championship. Kockler, a 6-2 junior post, canned 21 points as the Bengals finished at 21-3.

Gross was selected tournament MVP.

Capital's girls were 7-13 and did not qualify for state. The Bruins, who did not have a cager taller than 5-10, were led offensively by Robin Lee and Michelle Eble, at 9.7 and 9.5 ppg, respectively.

On the boys side, neither local club made it past the Eastern Division playoffs in Butte. The Bruins finished with an 8-12 mark, while Helena went 5-15.

Leading Capital's attack were Rich Knuckles, who averaged 17 points, and John Phelan, at 14 ppg. The Bengals were paced by Brian Schweyen (13.8 ppg) and Brian Mulholland (13.1 ppg).

In Class B, defending state champion Boulder (16-7) won the 4B title, but missed state when it went 1-2 at the Southern Divisionals in Livingston. Big Timber – with help from future NFL player Tim Hauck – captured the division crown.

The Panthers placed three cagers on the All-District team; David LeMieux (14 ppg), Mike Ritthaler and David Arnold. Townsend's Tim Newman (15.3 ppg) and Tom Roddacker were also selected to the all-4B team.

Collegiately, neither Carroll clubs qualified for the Frontier Conference playoffs.

The Saints women went 12-16 overall, 6-9 in the conference. Chris Kelly paced CC, averaging 15.1 points and 7.7 rebounds. She was named first team All-Frontier, with sophomore teammate Mary Burton (10.5 ppg) making honorable mention.

The Hilltopper's men were 8-20 and 2-13. Their top scorer was John Shaddle, at 12.4 points. Former Bruin Matt Tresch chipped in 7.8 ppg.

Rodeo, Bowling, Skiing

Kent Mosher of Augusta won the Northern Rodeo Association's bulldogging season championship, with earnings of $6,151. He also placed second in the all-around, at $10,293.

At the NRA finals in Billings, Helena's Curt Pate scratched out a score of 77 on Hermie's Worm to win the final go.

Mary Melaney of Wolf Creek garnered the breakaway roping on the first night, with a 3.08, moving her into second place in the all-around.

The Big Sky Regional Rodeo took place at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds 25 years ago. Townsend's Denise (White) Thompson, barrel racing for Dawson Community College, won the first go-round in 14.07. She went on to claim the barrels' average crown. Hometown cowgirl Becky Kington of Montana Western posted the fastest second round, in 14.29.

Tim Bagnell, Carroll College's lone entrant, garnered the second round calf roping, clocking an 11.2.

Montana State won the men's championship, while DCC captured the women's title.

Because of a shortage of bull riders, a jackpot event took place, with local cowboys Mike Goyins and former NRA champ Mark Dunn placing 1-2.

On the bowling lanes, Sally Russell captured the singles title in the Helena Women's Bowling Tournament, rolling a 699. Vickie Hermanson was second at 689. The doubles champions were Terry Tenneson and Paula Mansfield, at 1,273, followed by runnersup Rose Pachl and Donna Murray.

Len's Rug Bugs claimed the team title.

The 1985 Masters/Masterettes tourney was won by Al Carette and Lola Cloninger.

Carette defeated Ron "Boogie" Briggeman 461-432 for the men's championship. Dan Sturdevant placed third, followed by Louie Olson in fourth and Bob Pascool, fifth.

Cloninger garnered the women's crown, beating Mary Andridge 396-339. Coming in third was Bev Moore, while Rhonda Tetrault took fourth.

A pair of teenagers came up with some big scores in the junior leagues. Troy Gustovich, 17, bowled a 760 series, while Doug Prewett, 18, fired a perfect 300 game.

On the ski slopes, three Helena Junior Nordic Racing Team members received special recognition at Bozeman's Jim Bridger Langlauf series. Chris Mougeot (16-19 years) was rated fourth, ranked second was Mark Jankowski (12-15), and Danny Jankowski (11-under) was fourth.

Top placers at the Junior Olympic qualifier at the Cross Cut Ranch were Kiefer Hahn, Justin Vik, Kelly Williams, Jason Redfield, Tom Taylor, Charlie Beaton and Joel Lang. Leading the girls finishers were Anna Evenson and Kelly Redfield.

Maggie Sternhagen, 15, qualified for the 1985 JO National Alpine Skiing Championships at Jackson Hole, Wyo. Skiing for the Bridger Ski Education Foundation, Maggie competed in the J2 division in downhill, slalom and giant slalom.
