Arena would give Olympic sports bigger claim to Devaney Center (The Daily Nebraskan)

Posted: 16 Feb 2010 09:25 PM PST

Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it.

Every afternoon there are more than 200 student athletes who practice at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Most of them don't play basketball.

On May 11, Lincoln voters will decide if they want to help finance a new basketball arena. That vote may also mean turning Nebraska's current basketball arena into Nebraska's "Olympic Village, almost," according to Marc Boehm, NU's executive associate athletic director.

For years, the track and field, wrestling, swimming and gymnastics teams have competed for pieces of a pie made for the basketball team at the Devaney. If the basketball team wants the gym, it gets the gym, whether it be for a game, practice or shoot-around. But if the basketball team gets a new arena to accompany a new practice facility on the south side of the Devaney, other sports can start using the main floor space during prime-time hours.

That could help with recruiting as well as team morale, said men's gymnastics coach Chuck Chmelka.

"The biggest crowd we've had here in the past 15 years was a Friday night meet," he said. "People just like watching sporting events on a Friday night."

The gymnastics and wrestling meets are now typically held on Sundays, but Boehm said both those sports, and occasionally volleyball, could begin to use the Devaney on Friday and Saturday nights.

Yet even if they don't get to hold Friday-night meets, Chmelka said not having to put up and take down gymnastics equipment an hour before or after meets would serve his team well.

"There is a huge advantage to practicing in a huge arena instead of the little gym we have here, where we are used to everything," Chmelka said. "If we could leave an apparatus up a day before an event, shoot, that would help us a lot."

There are currently no specific plans being discussed by the athletic department to make the Devaney more Olympic-sports friendly, Boehm said. But there would likely be some rearranging and construction to improve those sports' facilities if basketball moves out.

Nebraska's Olympic sports coaches' offices sit beyond a small glass door that opens into a narrow hallway in the Devaney. The different teams' offices are practically shared with one another, a far cry from the foyer at the entrance to the basketball offices, which will soon be moved to the new practice facility.

"It will free up a lot of space … and the Olympic sports will benefit," Boehm said.

Down the hall from the Olympic sports offices is another narrow corridor leading to the gymnastics team's practice facility, which is difficult to find — even for those who know where it is — and currently houses a trampoline that covers the floor exercise mat. The wrestlers practice in a hot room big enough for just two large wrestling mats and two rows of monkey bars stretching from one end of the room to the other.

"Sometimes they'll spin and your hand will get all calloused-up and bleed," David Klingsheim, a freshman wrestler, said of the monkey bars. "They're not very fun at all."

Klingsheim said he would like to see a wrestling practice room big enough for three mats while he is on the team, but he also said wrestlers don't want to be coddled with nice facilities.

"Better facilities will mean better opportunities to work hard," he said. "You're really just looking for a place where you can come and work hard."
