Gymnastics honor seniors in last meet of season (Western Herald)

On Sunday, March 21 at 1 p.m., the Western Michigan University gymnastics team will take on one of the MAC's toughest teams, Kent State University, for a dual meet in the last home contest of the season.

"Kent State and Central Michigan University are two team that will be favored for the MAC title," Bronco head coach Dave Kuzara said. "We can control what we can do, but it's not like football where we can play defense. I do believe we have a chance to have our best score of the year this weekend – we've been practicing well lately."

The young Broncos team will honor seniors Liz Prouty and Tonya Eckert in their last home meet of their career, during which they've seen a coaching change with first year coach Kuzara.

"Liz and Tonya have been great people to work with during the transition," Kuzara said. "By the third year, they had stuff figured out and then things got turned upside down with a new coach and a new way to practice, but they've been supportive even though things are a little different.

The Brown and Gold are coming off a heartbreaking third place finish at the Eagle Invitational in Ypsilanti last weekend. The Broncos had a chance to win the meet, but struggled with the balance beam in the final event even though it had been one of the team's best events all year.

"We didn't reach out goal of winning, but we are getting better," Kuzara said. "We're getting better and that's part of becoming a winning team. In the past, we wouldn't have been in that position. The bars are a hard place to concentrate during the last event."

Junior Kristine Garbarino placed second individually in the meet with an all-around score of 38.225 to lead WMU as she has done most of the season. Eckert was the top finisher in the beam, posting a score of 9.575. Meanwhile, sophomore Megan Donavon also had a strong showing for the Broncos, winning the bars with a 9.725.

"Kristine and Megan have really stepped up this year," Kuzara said. "As underclassman, they have the chance to come back next year and show the future is really bright."

In addition to the last regular meet of the season this Sunday, the Broncos will have a chance to compete at the MAC championship on Saturday, March 27, at Bowling Green State University.

The No. 22 Washington gymnastics squad (4-10) travels the short distance across town to take on their inter-city rivals, Seattle Pacific, on Friday, March 19 at 7 p.m. in the Huskies' final regular-season meet of the year. After this weekend's meet, UW heads into postseason competition when they travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the Pac-10 Championships on the campus of the University of Arizona, Sat., March 27 at 3 p.m. PT.

Live Coverage
A free live webcast and live stats will both be available through Seattle Pacific's official website, www.spufalcons.com. The link can also be found on GoHuskies.com via the gymnastics schedule page.

Last Week
The Huskies reached a season-best for the second straight week and the fourth time in five weeks, scoring an impressive 195.800 in a loss to No. 2 Oklahoma, which scored 196.900 a week after posting the nation's highest score of the year. The Huskies tied season highs on three of the four events, recording a 49.025 on floor, a 49.000 on vault and a 48.850 on beam. They also scored well on bars with their third-highest score of the season, a 48.925. Hatsune Akaogi finished second in the all-around with 38.975 and Lauren Rogers competed in her first all-around of the year, finishing third with 38.500. Kristen Linton tied for second on floor with a 9.875, a season-best for UW on the event this year and a career best for the junior. Samantha Walior, meanwhile, tied for third on beam with a season-high tying 9.850.

Huskies in the Rankings
The Huskies jumped to their highest ranking since the second week of the season, moving up three spots to No. 22 with a Regional Qualifying Score of 195.135. Thanks to a season-high at Oklahoma, the Huskies were able to drop their lowest score of the year, which came in their first road meet of the season at Oregon State early on. UW had to wait a couple weeks to compete in their third road meet to qualify for an RQS but after back-to-back weeks of setting a season high, they jumped back into the overall team rankings. The Huskies also rank in the top 25 on bars (No. 20) and beam (No. 22) along with ranking 27th on floor and 33rd on vault.

UW has reached a high of No. 19 this season, which they garnered after a strong opening-week performance against No. 12 Nebraska. UW opened the season in the top-25 for the first time since 2006, coming in at No. 25.

Scouting Seattle Pacific
The Falcons are at home for the first time in two months and eight meets to host their inter-city rivals. NCAA Division II SPU ranks 63rd among all college teams (190.500) in the rankings that are dominated by Division I squads. The Falcons are rated No. 8 among teams that will vie for the USA Gymnastics collegiate title. Junior Anissa Madrid ranks No. 3 among all USAG collegiate beam performers and is ranked No. 7 nationally in the all-around

The Falcons surpassed the 190-point barrier with a season-high score of 190.500 on Feb. 12 at Boise State. The Falcons did not accumulate a score of 190 during the regular season last year. Sophomore Sherah Veron is SPU's top-ranked gymnast in two events in the USAG ratings. She compiled the team's best score of 9.750 on vault and tied Brittany Malone for SPU's best floor mark of 9.800.

About the Series
The Huskies are 69-3 all-time against SPU and have won 13 straight in the series, including a win against the Falcons in a tri-meet earlier this season. UW defeated SPU with a score of 194.100 with both teams falling to No. 6 Arkansas. The Huskies also beat SPU in a quad meet in Seattle last year. The Falcons have not defeated UW since a 192.875-191.475 win in their home gym on March 8, 2004.

Coming On Strong
The Huskies have started to heat up over the last month of the season, recording their four best overall team scores in the last five meets, including a season-high last week at Oklahoma. The Huskies have also posted season bests on all four events, earning at least a 49.000 twice each on three of the four apparatus and equaling their season high on beam (48.850) three times. UW is hoping to carry that momentum through their meet of the season before heading into the Pac-10 Championships.

Things started clicking for UW five weeks ago against Arizona State when they posted their first score of 195.000 or better despite a narrow loss to the Sun Devils. In that meet, the Huskies also recorded their first event scores of 49.000 or better, earning a 49.000 on vault and a 49.025 on floor, both of which they equaled last week. The next week, UW topped their best team score in a win over Cal, registering a 195.625, their best since a 196.000 last season in a win over Oregon State. UW also reached season bests on bars (49.025) and beam (48.850) in the victory. The Huskies then topped themselves again two weeks at No. 19 Arizona, earning a 195.675 and recording their season high on bars with a 49.050. The Huskies equaled season highs on vault, beam and floor last week in setting a team high again with a 195.800.
