Sports briefs: Several district athletes named to All-SPSL Gymnastics Team (Federal Way Mirror) Posted: 16 Mar 2010 11:53 AM PDT Several Federal Way school district gymnastics athletes were named to the South Puget Sound League's North Division all-league teams. Jefferson's Madi Kellar and Shelby Church earned first-team honors in the all-around, as did Beamer's Sam West and Cassie Peterson. West was also named first-team on the vault, bars and balance beam. Peterson was named first-team on the vault, bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Kellar was also named first-team on the bars, beam and floor exercise and Church was first-team on the bars and beam. Jefferson's Monica Church was a first-teamer on the balance beam an Beamer's Chelsi Freeborn was a first-team on the floor exercise. • The Federal Way boys U-16 soccer team went undefeated during the Washington State Commissioners Cup soccer tournament. The team beat Vancouver's U16 Select Chinook Fire '93 in the finals on Feb. 28, 3-1, at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila to win the state championship. The team is coached by Don Nordman and consists of Colin Kim, Kyle Byquist, Chace Nestor, Nicholas Bod, Aaron Nordman, Michael Klavuhn, Austin Schultz, Alex Dedaj, Stephen Tartaglia, Jacob Rohrer, Casey Vaa, Tucker Parsons, Jarred Prather, Sam Clement, John Peters and Hayden Smith. • Western Washington University guard Morris Anderson received first-team honors on the 2009-10 Daktronics NCAA Division II West Region All-Star team announced Wednesday. Anderson, a Federal Way High School grad, is second on the Vikings in scoring at 14.7 points a game, and leads in assists (5.2) and steals (2.4), topping the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and ranking 14th nationally in the latter category. He also paces the conference in free-throw percentage at 86.7 percent (85-of-98), at one point making a school record 39 consecutive free throws. Anderson was earlier named first-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference. • Pacific Raceways will host the inaugural U.S. National Extreme Karts races March 20-21. Racing around the 2.25-mile road course will begin at 9 a.m. and go until 5 p.m. each day. The field will feature Portand's Chris Hegar, who races in three classes in his a Shark Shifter kart – Formula 125, limited heavy and super stock CR 125. Hegar, who has been racing for 20 years, typically competes in five events each year. His brother, Ryan, is his strongest competitor. The Hegar brothers travel throughout the country behind sponsors Hagar 4 Manufacturing, Shark Shifter and NGK Spark Plugs. "Regardless of the weather (I'm) excited to race at Pacific Raceways," Chris Hegar said. "(Pacific Raceways has) one of the best tracks, in terms of layouts, just not that many people realize the potential that this track has." Daily admission is $10 for adults, $5 for youth 7-14 and children 6 and under are free. There also will be drawings for spectators to race a kart at a future event; two adults and two juniors will win race entries. The youth soccer league named Mike and Maizie Franco its Volunteers of the Year, John Raflowski and Steve Hair the Boys Coaches of the Year and Derek Bettge the Girls Coach of the Year. The Sportsmanship Award was given to the U-10 Silver Seals coached by Bill Richardson, the U-6 Lightening coached by Ken Martin and the U-7 Stingrays coached by Travis Hurn and Gary Haven. • Decatur High School graduate Brock Gates is rolling in the early season for the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team. Through 13 games, Gates his hitting .375 with six home runs and 18 RBIs. He also has scored 15 runs and has two doubles. The Lutes have started the season with an 11-2 record. Gates, a sophomore first baseman, started his career at the University of Washington. Gates broke his ankle before his redshirt freshman year and was cut by the Huskies. He then transferred to Edmonds Community College, where he played his freshman season. Gates is also set to play quarterback at PLU in the fall. • The 75th running of the $250,000 Longacres Mile highlights a 31-race stakes schedule for the 2010 season at Emerald Downs. A total of $1,760,000 will be offered in stakes purses including a quarter-million for the diamond anniversary running of the Grade 3 Longacres Mile on Aug. 22. One of the premiere middle-distance events on the West Coast, The Mile anchors a stakes double-header that includes the $75,000 Emerald Distaff for older fillies and mares at a mile and one-eighth. The stakes schedule is designed to develop champions in all divisions at increasingly longer distances. The $50,000 Hastings Handicap for older fillies and mares at six furlongs on May 2 is the first stakes of the season. Other highlights include Mile Preview Day on Sunday, Aug. 1, featuring the $50,000 Mt. Rainer Handicap for older horses at a 1-1/8 mile and the $50,000 Boeing Handicap for fillies and mares at a 1-1/16. The $75,000 Emerald Downs Derby has been moved to Sunday, Aug. 15. The meet's top event for 3 year olds at 1-1/8 mile makes it possible for horses to wheel back and participate in The Mile. Washington Cup VIII, a series of six races for state-breds worth $250,000, is Sunday, Sept. 12. And as part of the Pacific Challenge, British Columbia-breds again can participate in the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic, Belle Roberts and Chinook Pass Stakes. The $75,000 Gottstein Futurity for 2 year olds will be run at 1 1/16 mile on closing day, Sunday, Sept. 26 The 2010 season, the 15th at Emerald Downs, begins Friday, April 9 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 26. Racing days for the 89-day meeting are Friday, Saturday and Sunday with Thursday racing June 10 to Aug. 26. The purses for overnight races, enhanced by a contribution from the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, will begin the season at the same levels as the start of 2009. • The Tacoma-Pierce County Volleyball Officials Board is in need of individuals who are interested in officiating middle school, junior high, senior high, college, and recreation department volleyball matches throughout Pierce County and south King County. A comprehensive training program is offered for all new officials and the opportunities to advance in the organization are extensive. For students, retirees, or former athletes looking to re-connect with a sport, officiating high school sports is also an excellent way to earn some extra income and provide a great service to the teams. Registration is now being accepted for the spring middle school programs in Auburn, Federal Way, Sumner, Buckley, and Enumclaw that begin in mid-April. Training sessions will be held on April 12-14 from 6-9 p.m. To sign up as an official, fees and registration forms are due no later than March 30. BERKELEY - California sophomore men's gymnast Glen Ishino, the reigning national and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation gymnast of the week, repeated as the MPSF gymnast for the week of March 15, the conference office announced Tuesday. Ishino further established his dominance on March 13 with a 90.900 all-around win, in the No. 9 California men's gymnastics team's final home meet of the 2010 campaign - a 354.650-344.300 upset win over No. 6 Penn State. Ishino tied for first on parallel bars and took home the titles on vault and pommel horse. On floor, Ishino was Cal's top finisher with a 15.250, a new season high, for second place. Ishino's event-winning 15.450 on pommel horse was not only yards above the other competitors - second place was a 14.800 by PSU's Felix Aronovich - but also good enough for a new season and career high. Ishino's previous best on horse in 2010 was a 15.200 and his career high was 15.400. Thanks to Ishino's score, Cal hit a 2010 high on horse with a 58.200, above its previous season best of 56.950 and just short of its all-time best of 58.250. Ishino soared to a first-place finish on vault with his 15.850 to push the Bears to a 62.450-61.850 win on the event.
