Maple City gymnastics shine at Arnold Challenge (The Daily Telegram) Posted: 13 Mar 2010 08:04 PM PST Several members of the Maple City Gymnastics Center competed the weekend of March 5-7 in the prestigious Arnold Gymnastics Challenge hosted by Gahanna Cyclone Gymnastics at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The meet is one of the biggest in the United States as more than 2,400 gymnasts competed in this year's event. The three-day extravaganza regularly features performances by acclaimed U.S. Olympians such as Blaine Wilson, Chelsie Memmel, and Paul and Morgan Hamm. The meet is part of the Arnold Sports Festival sponsored by Arnold Schwarzenegger and is the biggest multi-sports competition in the country. Local gymnasts competed at five different levels, and the Maple City Level 5 team scored a 110.850 team score for second place overall. Kaileah Sweet and Danielle Mauss competed in the 12-year-old age division with Level 5, with Sweet bringing home three gold medals in the 9.525 in floor exercise, 9.075 in vaulting and a 37.050 in the all-around. She also placed second on balance beam (9.30) and uneven bars (9.15). Mauss won the uneven bars gold medal with her score of 9.2 and was runner-up in both floor ex (9.3) and vaulting (9.0). Mauss also scored an 8.6 on beam and finished with an all-around score of 36.10 for third place. Ally McLouth of Addison competed at Level 5 in the 8-9 age group, and won the all-around with her score of 36.45. That included a second-place of 9.475 in floor ex, a 9.05 on bars and an 8.75 in vaulting She scored a 9.175 on beam for third place. Ashton Azelton of Tecumseh and Madison Harkness of Britton competed in the 10-year-old division at Level 5, where Azelton won the gold medal on bars with her score of 9.4. She was also second on beam (9.425), seventh in floor ex (9.15), scored an 8.5 in vaulting and placed third in the all-around with a 36.475. Harkness was fourth on both bars (9.075) and floor ex (9.375), was 10th on bam (9.05) and 11th in vaulting (8.6) while finishing sixth in the all-around at 36.10. Haleigh Ouellette of Manitou Beach was the only local gymnast to compete in the Level 6 meet and she placed fifth on both the uneven bars (8.9) and vaulting (8.95) while scoring an 8.275 on both beam and floor ex, giving her an all-around score of 34.40. Competing at Level 7 was 12-year-old Lauren Richardson of Brooklyn. Richardson took home a gold medal in the uneven bars with her 9.15 score, placed second on beam (8.825), third in floor ex (9.1) and fifth in vaulting (8.825) for a gold-medal all-around score of 34.90. She qualified for the even finals on bars and scored a 9.15. The Level 8 meet featured 10-year-old Elizabeth Iliev of Palmyra and 13-year-old McKenna Schoenberger of Tecumseh. Schoenberger had an outstanding meet as she won the beam competition in the 13-year-old division with her score of 9.35 as well as taking first in floor ex (9.3) and vaulting (9.25) as well as the all-around (37.125). She also scored a 9.225 on bars and placed third. She qualified for the event finals in three of her events, winning the beam finals with her 9.45 and placing seventh in vaulting (8.85) and eighth in floor ex (8.925). Iliev was equally impressive in the Level 8 meet as she competed in the 11-year-old division. Iliev won the balance beam (9.425), floor ex (9.275) and the all-around (36.875), placed third on bars (9.125) and fourth in vaulting (9.05). She placed fourth in the beam finals with a score of 9.225. Fourteen-year-old McKenzie Foster of Manitou Beach competed in the Level 9 meet in the 14-15 age group where she was nearly unbeatable, winning the uneven bars (9.05), beam (9.125) and floor ex (9.4) leading to a gold medal in the all-around with her score of 37.025. She placed second in vaulting at 9.45 and qualified for event finals in all four individual events. She won the bars final with a 9.3, finished fourth in vaulting (9.35), seventh on beam (8.775) and eighth on floor ex (9.075). Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
