WEST POINT, N.Y. - Six different members of the No. 6 California men's gymnastics team competed at Saturday evening's NCAA Individual Championships with four earning All-America status. Cal's highest finisher on any event was sophomore Glen Ishino, this year's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation gymnast of the year, on pommel horse. The Santa Ana, Calif., native scored 15.150 to finish second and become an All-American. Also competing on pommel was freshman Donathon Bailey, who had an exceptional NCAA weekend as a true freshman, scoring 12.225 for 10th place, putting him out of reach of All-America status. On parallel bars, Jim Kerry took sixth place with a 14.600 to become an All-American on the event. In his first ever NCAA Championships, Christian Monteclaro earned All-America status on vault thanks to his 15.850, which placed him in a two-way tie for sixth. Junior Bryan del Castillo also took sixth place, but on floor, scoring 15.300, to become an All-American. Another true freshman making people take notice was Steven Lacombe, who took 10th with his 14.625. Six more Junior Sports Academies Posted: 17 Apr 2010 05:57 PM PDT | By Jonathan Wong GYMNASTICS is not offered as a co-curricular activity at Holy Innocents' Primary School, but that did not deter triplets Zac, Zon and Zen Liew (all aged nine) from taking up the sport. The trio have been enrolled in private gym classes for the past five years. But support for kids like them arrived yesterday following the launch of six new Junior Sports Academies (JSAs) by the Ministry of Education. There are now 21 such training centres island-wide.Two new sports - artistic gymnastics (at Hwa Chong Institution) and bowling (at Singapore Sports School) - will now feature at the JSAs, increasing the total number of sports to 11. The triplets will now hone their gymnastic skills at Hwa Chong. Said a delighted Zac, who with his brother Zon, represented their school at the recent Inter-Primary School Artistic Gymnastics competition: 'Training will be more interesting, but also tougher.' Added his mother Jolene Tan: 'The academy's programme is structured and has the bonus of being recognised by the government. The kids will be trained by good coaches and it will help develop their skills.' Both gymnastics and bowling have national sports associations with strong youth development programmes, explained Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Education and Home Affairs) Masagos Zulkilfi yesterday at the JSA 2010 launch at Ai Tong School, which will specialise in table tennis. Other new venues are Cedar Girls' Secondary School (athletics), Rosyth School (badminton) and Victoria School (football). They are selected based on their achievement records, sporting culture and management support. The MOE pilot programme, started in 2008, targets talented Primary 5 pupils (for gymnastics, selection is from Primary 3). A total of 930 students will be involved in the programme, with training conducted between two and four times weekly.
