Stanford men finish second in NCAA gymnastics championships at U.S. Military Academy Posted: 16 Apr 2010 09:12 PM PDT Michigan came from behind on the final rotation to overtake both Stanford and Oklahoma to win the NCAA men's gymnastics title at the United States Military Academy in West Point on Friday night. | The fourth-seeded Stanford led the Sooners by .050 points entering the last event for each team. The Wolverines responded with a 62.700 score on the vault while the Cardinal managed a 59.350 on the still rings. Michigan won the title with a team score of 360.500 while Stanford finished second at 359.800. Oklahoma was third, followed by Illinois, California and Ohio State. The individual event finals will be held Saturday. Men's gymnastics is the third Stanford team to reach the national championships and finish second, joining women's soccer and women's basketball. Nicholas Noone and Eddie Penev each recorded a top score in an event. Noone placed first on the parallel bars with a score of 15.450 while Penev scored 16.400 to take the top spot on the vault. They will be joined in Saturday's event finals by Josh Dixon, Ryan Lieberman, Alex Buscaglia, Abhinav Ramani, Tim Gentry and John Martin. Stanford placed in the top two for the third consecutive year. The Cardinal was the national runner-up in 2008 and won the NCAA title last year. Stanford opened on the vault with a big score of 64.05 to take the early lead. Penev recorded his best vault of the year with a score of 16.4. Dixon and Gentry also had big efforts, each scoring a 16.0.
