Grove partners with Aerials Gymnastics for facility Posted: 18 Jun 2010 09:54 AM PDT Posted By Naeema SiddiquaPosted 13 hours agoA large cheer erupted at the Spruce Grove city council meeting on Monday following council's decision to fund a detailed architectural design for a new gymnastics facility for the Aerials Gymnastics. The city has agreed to share 50 per cent of the total cost of $300,000 to produce an architectural design of the facility. An architectural design is the first step to completing this new community facility and will give accurate costs for future budget deliberations. "For (several years) the Aerials Gymnastics has been approaching Spruce Grove for a facility," said mayor Stuart Houston."(Now) we are actually going to have drawings and designs when the process is complete. Keep the fundraising going," he added. Monday's commitment puts the city in partnership with the Aerials to complete the city owned facility before the 2012 Alberta Winter Games, which is to be hosted by the tri-region. The games are expected to boost sports tourism in the region. "I think this is a very important step for sports tourism," said Alderman Wayne Rothe. "They are so well prepared and I hope this facility eventually does get built and become the centre of activity." Once designs are complete, city administration will be looking for a location for the facility, which hasn't been determined yet. So far an expansion to the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre has been ruled out. According to the Aerials' building committee chair Lindsay Kiezik, they are looking for a 20,000 sq. ft. facility that will be able to house the 2,000 members of the Aerials. "In essence we want to be one that will be able to host any size/level of meet, for example the AB winter games and the provincial," she said. Of course with 19 months left until the games, the question remains whether the facility will be complete on time. "Anything is possible if you put your mind to it," said an optimistic Kiezik. So far the building committee has raised approximately $722,000 for the project since it began campaigning aggressively in 2007. The mayor hinted at further funding commitment in the future.
