U.S. gymnastics team to receive '00 bronze medals Posted: 23 Jun 2010 04:08 PM PDT INDIANAPOLIS - Members of the U.S. women's gymnastics team at the 2000 Olympics will receive their bronze medals at a ceremony in August after being elevated to third place when a Chinese gymnast was disqualified for being underage. Earlier this year, the International Olympic Committee stripped China of the medal after an investigation that found Dong Fangxiao was only 14 at the Sydney Games. Gymnasts must turn 16 during the Olympic year to be eligible for the games. The U.S. team, which finished fourth but was elevated when China's third-place finish was nullified, will receive the medals Aug. 11, at a ceremony before U.S. nationals in Hartford. Members of the team are Amy Chow, Jamie Dantzscher, Dominique Dawes, Kristen Maloney, Elise Ray and Tasha Schwikert. More sports than you've had hot dinners Posted: 23 Jun 2010 11:03 PM PDT Galbraith, currently at Hibernian FC, joined representatives from Scottish Borders Council's sports development team, Border Sport and Leisure Trust (BSLT) and Jedburgh Leisure Facility Trust to officially launch the programme to encourage youngsters to take part in a wide range of sports July 5 to August 13. Galbraith said: "The holiday programme is a great opportunity for parents to introduce their children to sport and encourage them to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. "The variety of sports on offer is great and I would encourage kids to try as many different sports as possible while they are still young. "It's great to see there are still great opportunities for kids in the Borders and for some of them this could be a stepping stone into a career in sport. "The programme includes SFA coaching sessions which were the first structured football sessions I was involved in. I still look back and remember how much I enjoyed them." The revamped programme includes summer sports camps in Kelso and Duns which promise to keep youngsters entertained all day, and include staff from SBC's arts development service. Other sports on offer include activity clubs, athletics, cricket, disability sports, girls' clubs, Scottish FA football, gymnastics, hip hop, cheerleading, hockey, 'kidz clubs', games clubs, netball, basketball, performing arts, racquet sports, rugby, surfing, tennis, trigolf, Clubgolf and ultimate games. All youngsters across the region will receive a copy of the programme from their school over the next week. The programme is also available to download online at www.sportborders.org.uk and www.bslt.org.uk To request a copy of the brochure or for more information phone the holiday sports hotline on 01896 759913 or email holidaysports@scotborders.gov.uk Five Filters featured article: Headshot - Propaganda, State Religion and the Attack On the Gaza Peace Flotilla.
