Posted: 12 Jul 2010 12:14 PM PDT As participation increases and the age of sport specialization drops, sports-related injuries are on the rise for the younger generation. How can parents ensure their children are best prepared for the rigors of athletics so that they can also reap the associated benefits? Protect the budding Shawn Johnsons or Jonathan Toews of the world by following professional advice on preventing and treating common ailments. Be prepared Healthy bodies start with a good foundation: a well-balanced diet and good hydration. "If you're not hydrated, your body will take that water from other places," says Kathleen C. Hertz, a physical therapist from Flexeon Rehabilitation in Frankfort, Ill. "If you're not getting enough of anything, it will cause those storage areas in the body to be used up, and performance will be affected." Make sure young athletes are eating a healthy diet, including all food groups, and drinking lots of water. For years, health professionals have urged athletes to warm up prior to exercise, but Hertz advises taking things a step further. "Have a good warm-up to get your muscles, joints and body systems prepared for what you're going to be doing," says Hertz, who recommends including stretching as well as dynamic motion work similar to your sport before practice or competition begins. More is better According to Safe Kids USA, more than 3.5 million children age 14 and younger receive medical treatment for sports-related injuries each year. Hertz believes this corresponds to an earlier-than-ever tendency to specialize in one sport. "One-sport athletes have a higher injury rate than three-sport athletes," says Hertz. "In one sport, they're putting stress on the same muscle groups and joints all year round." Avoid overuse by scheduling rest periods and allowing kids to explore multiple sports to use a variety of muscle groups and joints. Medical attention While the ailments that occur most frequently depend on the specific sport, any sport can produce any injury. "Take a look at the inflammation process to determine if you need professional help," Hertz says. "Is the area really swollen, red or painful? Is the child unable to walk?" A "yes" to any of these questions should result in an evaluation by a sports medicine professional. For injuries that don't meet early criteria, watch to ensure the athlete shows quick improvement; cases that don't improve should be looked into. Parents should develop a relationship with a good sports rehab clinic to help keep kids injury-free. With new understanding about sports-related injuries being uncovered regularly, such as concussion guidelines or even pitch count regulations, the entire sports medicine community is able to work together to help young athletes stay healthy. Sports injury stats Hey, Sport, did you know … 30 More than 30 million children participate in sports each year in the United States. 2 Approximately 2 out of every 5 traumatic brain injuries among children are associated with participation in sports and recreational activities. Sprain The most common types of sport-related injuries in children are sprains (mostly ankle), muscle strains, bone or growth-plate injuries, repetitive motion injuries, and heat-related illness. 49,000 Each year, approximately 49,000 injuries are occur in children ages 5 to 14 involving skiing, snowboarding or sledding. 62Most organized-sports-related injuries (62 percent) occur during practice rather than games. RatesThe highest rates of injury for boys, in regards to sports, are ice hockey, rugby and soccer. Soccer, basketball and gymnastics seem to incur the highest rates of injury in girls.
