Kentwood, Mead share All-Sports championship Posted: 11 Jul 2010 12:27 AM PDT A newcomer joined a familiar face atop The News Tribune's 22nd Annual All-Sports Championship listings. First-time winner Kentwood tied 14-time champion Mead of Spokane for bragging rights in Class 4A when the final points were tallied for the 2009-10 school year. Kentwood and Mead made late pushes to climb the standings. The Conquerors, who finished second last year, enjoyed a fantastic spring season, winning state titles in baseball and boys tennis, placing second in girls tennis and third in boys golf. Kentwood also won the boys basketball title and was third in girls soccer. "I think the consistency of our coaches helps us," Conquerors athletic director JoAnne Daughtry said. "They've all been here for a while, and there's a lot to be said for that. And they all have the philosophy of encouraging kids to play multiple sports." Mead also won three state championships, sweeping the boys and girls team titles at Star Track and winning the volleyball title. "We're blessed with great kids," Mead athletic director Dick Cullen said. "We've got a highly motivated student-body. Not just in sports, but in debate, drama and so many other things." This is the first tie atop the 4A standings since Ferris and Sehome shared the crown in 1997-98. In Class 3A, 3-year-old Union of East Vancouver claimed its first all-sports crown. The Titans won one state championship but were balanced, scoring points in 14 all-sports categories. Union's lone title came in thrilling fashion. The unranked Titans boys basketball team stunned No. 2 Rainier Beach, No. 4 Lakes and No. 1 Enumclaw, in order, at the state tournament. The seat of power in 3A shifted to Clark County in 2009-10. Union was one of three Greater St. Helens League schools that finished in the top five. Camas was third and Columbia River fifth in the all-sports standings. For the fourth year in a row, the Class 2A winner came from the Northwest Conference. Sehome of Bellingham won for the third time in four seasons. The Mariners' 302 points were the most recorded by any school in any classification this year – two years ago Sehome totaled 424. The NWC also boasted the second- and third-place schools in Burlington-Edison and Bellingham. King's defended its title in Class 1A and also earned its seventh all-sports banner in 11 years after it won state titles in girls cross country, volleyball and boys track and field. Cascade Christian finished second with 219 points. Colfax repeated in Class 2B and Colton edged defending champion Almira/Coulee-Hartline by two points for its first Class 1B crown.
