Posted: 26 Jul 2010 03:43 PM PDT July 26, 2010 Sports briefsLOCAL Stringrays place 5th at D-II meet The Tahlequah Stingrays Swim Team finished in fifth place out of 10 teams at the Division II Long Course Championship Meet this past weekend at Oklahoma City Community College. It was a banner weekend for the Stingrays, where 22 personal best times were achieved and five more additional state-qualifying times were earned. Four Stingrays placed first in their events: Hali Martin (Girls 15-16, 50-meter freestyle), Nick Lawson (Boys 13-14, 200-meter breaststroke and 200-meter butterfly), Zack Owens (Boys 10-and-under, 50-meter freestyle) and Kayleigh Spears (Girls 100-meter freestyle). The Girls 19-and-under medley relay of Kristin Berry, Lauren Martin, Breonna Barker and Hali Martin placed second and also received a silver medal for the freestyle relay, which consisted of Berry, Emily Bywater, Emma Hunsaker, and H. Martin. Cheer It Up! to celebrate NGD National Gymnastics Day is Aug. 7 and Cheer It Up! is celebrating by having a "Cartwheel-a-thon" on the courthouse square from 10 a.m. to noon. Cheer It Up! will hold tumbling demonstrations and students will be performing as many cartwheels in a row for fundraising efforts for the upcoming competition season. B&G Club football sign-ups approaching Registration for 2010 Tahlequah youth football leagues is on the horizon. Registration will begin Aug. 3 at the football camp. The camp, hosted by the Tahlequah High School football coaching staff, will be located at the THS track. The camp, which will be from Aug. 3-5, will last from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The Boys & Girls Club of Tahlequah will also be accepting registration at the main office from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Aug. 6-13. The registration fee is $70. Any registration turned in after Aug. 14 is subject to a $10 penalty. The registration fee will cover the fall season, football camp, use of a helmet, shoulder pads and a jersey. Players will be required to purchase pants and pant pads. The B&G Club will have two leagues this fall: third- through sixth-graders will compete in tackle football while first- and second-grade kids will play in the flag-football league.
