SPORTS: Bluewater gymnasts take on the world Posted: 18 Sep 2010 07:39 AM PDT Posted 15 hours agoDAVE PAUL The Observer It was a major accomplishment in the gymnastics career of Bluewater's Dominique Pegg when she helped Canada to a silver medal at the Senior Pan American Championships, in Guadalajara, Mexico, earlier this month. Canada sent its World Championship team to the meet and wound up finishing second in the team competition to the United States, narrowly edging out Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela for the silver. The second-place finish meant that Canada qualifi ed a full team for the 2011 Pan American Games. What makes Pegg's performance --with top-10finishes in both the balance beam and vault --even more impressive is that she was essentially competing on one leg. A painful navicular bone stress fracture in her right foot limited her to only two events and, although she qualified for the individual beam finals, the decision was made to shut her down for the remainder of the competition and rest the injury. "I was in a little bit of pain," said Pegg, 16, earlier this week, while wearing a boot on the foot and using crutches to manoeuver around the Bluewater club, "but I was glad I was able to help out the team." "When the time came to do the job, she did what she had to do, despite the pain," said her Bluewater Coach Dave Brubaker, who was a member of the Canadian team's coaching staff . "Her scores helped the team. If you take them away, Canada would have finished fourth." It's been a busy year for Pegg, who has competed at major meets in Japan, Brazil, Australia, France, Mexico and the U.S. in the past year. However, the biggest meet was going to be the World Championships in Rotterdam. The national team doesn't leave for the Netherlands until mid-October and Pegg, who is still able to keep up her conditioning (she can still walk on her injured foot, but she is using the boot and crutches to rest and keep wait off it) is hopeful she will be able to compete at full strength by then. "It's unfortunate," said Brubaker, whose Bluewater club will host the national team at a pre-Worlds camp, beginning Oct. 4. "We would have liked her to be in top form for the Worlds. Now we're going to have to wait and see how she recovers." In the meantime, a potential fill-in for Pegg has been found --and the national team didn't have to search too far to find her. Bluewater's Emma Willis, who was already slated to compete for Canada at the Commonwealth Games in India in early October, will now do double duty. Following the team competition at the Commonwealth Games, Willis will travel from Delhi to Rotterdam and be available for the World Championships, if needed. Brubaker said Willis had already essentially secured the role of alternate for the World team but was not going to travel to the meet. Now she will be there if Pegg --or another member of the team is unable to compete. "It's pretty exciting," said Willis, 18, who adds she was already eagerly anticipating the trip to India. Willis said she will be ready to compete at both meets, if necessary. "I've been at two competitions close together before ... maybe not this major, but I'll be ready, for sure," she said. Willis, who was unable to compete for almost a year because of an elbow injury, said that issue is behind her. "Everything's fine with my elbow," she said. "I feel really good. ... There are always muscles that like to tweak, now and then, but overall, I'm good." dpaul@theobserver.ca This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read our FAQ page at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Triathlon, rugby highlight Sports Day coverage Posted: 18 Sep 2010 08:35 AM PDT Amateur sports enthusiasts will have a wide range of events to whet their appetites when CBC kicks off its coverage of Sports Day in Canada at noon ET Saturday. A day to celebrate amateur sport in the country and encourage Canadians to get active begins with a replay of the women's triathlon championship on the main network and streamed at CBCSports.ca. At 2 p.m., the Canadian Rugby Championship will be contested in St. John's featuring the Rock against Prairie Wolf Pack. The CBC will also bring viewers Canadian Interuniversity Sport action with the Queen's/McGill women's basketball game going to air at 4 p.m. Other events scheduled to be streamed include a CIS men's football game between Laval and St. Mary's (1 p.m.), a gymnastics exhibition from Oakville, Ont. (3 p.m.), and a Swim Canada exhibition from Calgary (4 p.m.). Sports Day is a joint venture involving ParticipACTION, CBC and the True Sport community organization and inspired by the buzz surrounding the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. A 2005 Statistics Canada study shows just 59 per cent of people aged 15-18 regularly participate in sports, down from 77 per cent 20 years ago. "We are in the middle of an inactivity crisis," said Kelly Murumets, president and CEO of ParticipACTION, a Canadian community sport organization. "If every Canadian could somehow have a greater appreciation for amateur sport in our country, that would be my goal."
