MSU wrestling, gymnastics compete in 'Beauty and the Beast' at West Virginia

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 08:06 PM PST

Although the tale is as old as time, applying Beauty and the Beast to sports is relatively new, and the MSU gymnastics and wrestling teams are entering uncharted waters Friday at West Virginia.

Friday night's event, titled Beauty and the Beast, will feature the two MSU teams competing against West Virginia's respective teams at the same time at the West Virginia University Coliseum.

"I think it's kind of a novel idea and kind of a creative way to host two events at the same time," MSU wrestling head coach Tom Minkel said. "We've never done an event with gymnastics, or any other sport for that matter, so I'm kind of looking forward to it and to see how it works."

In addition to simultaneously competing in the same arena, the athletes also will be featured through special introductions.

Each school's wrestlers will escort the gymnasts and they will be announced together, making a grand entrance in front of the crowd at the Coliseum. Beauty and the Beast will begin at 7:30 p.m.

"For us, there will be a wrestler waiting at the bottom of the stairs introduced with a gymnast to walk them out on the floor," West Virginia wrestling head coach Craig Turnbull said. "They'll continue doing that for I think 17 pairs like that. We have one corner of the Coliseum floor, and the gymnastics is set up in the rest of it, and we'll start both meets together."

While other schools, such as Oklahoma and Missouri, previously have participated in Beauty and the Beast events, this is the first time for MSU and West Virginia. The concept attracts a diverse group of fans and possibly even those who would not normally attend either sporting event, which is West Virginia's hope.

Both Spartan teams originally were scheduled to compete against the Mountaineers this weekend, and Turnbull said the scheduling worked out so both schools could participate in the event.

Junior 197-pounder Tyler Dickenson said his team is excited for Beauty and the Beast because it's an unusual concept in which many athletes do not get to partake.

"For a fan, it makes it a fun environment for someone who likes West Virginia athletics," Dickenson said. "It's going to be a fun atmosphere for them and for the athletes too."

With all of the anticipation and excitement surrounding the event and the special introductions, the Spartans cannot forget that they are in Morgantown, W.Va., Minkel said.

It would be easy to get caught up in the action in the arena, but with wrestling and gymnastics being about more individual competition, the athletes' performances won't be affected by the hype and will treat the event like it is nothing out of the ordinary.

"Once we get through the initial walking in the arena and seeing everything that's going on and once we start the warm-up process, I don't think it will make a difference either way," West Virginia gymnastics head coach Linda Burdette-Good said.

For MSU, both Minkel and gymnastics head coach Kathie Klages said if the event is well-run and enjoyable, it might be something they would consider doing again or hosting in the future.

"I think the Beauty and the Beast concept is a fun marketing idea," Klages said. "I think it will bring more excitement and fun to the arena for all of the fans."

"I hope that if it goes well that we could consider doing this at MSU in the future."
